70s Fender, what should I look for?

At least that for the bass and amp if the story checks out.
I'd bet he's not selling that gold sparkle, but a 70's bass and rig in almost any condition is worth more than a $1000.

Yea everyone is different. ^_^ I like thin, narrow necks which probably makes no sense since I learned on something somewhat opposite.
A friend here PMd me earlier asking if I had gone to look at this Fender bass today. I will just pass on what I sent to him:
Ok I had to wait for him to get home hence the late reply. He apologized for not coming back for me this morning. He ended up taking his uncle to the doctors and didn't get back till the afternoon and it slipped his mind to come get me. We are looking at it tomorrow mid morning.
I asked him some questions about the bass. He couldn't remember the color of it and he said that was stupid of him cause he was actually holding the axe yesterday to move it around in the room he was in and he couldn't remember its color to save his butt LOL I asked if the neck where the strings were (yea laymens terms for those that don't know LOL we know how that goes) was light or dark and he said it was light. So its got a maple fretboard. Thats all I know about it. I started to try and describe a P from a J but figured he'd get even more lost. LOL Im assuming its a P.
He did say his uncle is the original owner of it.
and I gathered from the conversation that this puppy is older then 'the 70s' when he first described it to me. I know he said he's grown up around that bass (which made him even more embarrassed that he couldn't tell me the color of it LOL) and hes in his late 30s early 40s right now. He mentioned that his uncle is like in his late 70s early 80s....man... and hes had it since it was brand new Could I possibly be about to 'meet' a pre-CBS Fender? 
He did say that at a music shop in the next town he and his uncle saw one 'just like it' for around $900.... Oh boy, thats the reissue P price isn't it? Now Im just expecting a P from the late 60s or early 70s but from what he was saying tonight, Im almost scared (for some reason) to think I /might/ end up looking at something far older.....
I also found out that this baby was almost destroyed in sense about 2 years ago. My friend said he offered to take it and strip it and refinish it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But his uncle decided against it at the last minute. I was like "So the finish is pretty worn, eh?" He said yes and I said that I was glad he DIDN'T refinish it!!!
I am definitely taking my digital camera with me tomorrow and grabbing pics. Im NOT going to get my hopes up at all in this but now Im not sure what Im going to be looking at. My luck isn't /that/ good so I will go there expecting to see a worn 70s Pbass and nothing more.
Oh yea he doesn't have it advertised -- I am the only one its been offered to!!

It's always possible this thing could be an old original P bass, with the single coil single pickup. Sounds to me like this guy you were talking to might be color blind. Sounds like like my dad when he didn't know what color something was.

Finding this kinda prize still happens ... picked up this original 1973 LPB Jazz early this year for $800.00 in the parking lot of a Chuck-E-Cheese pizza place (go figure)

I know it was funny watching the look on his face when he was trying to remember the color of it. Hes a naturally humorous guy and just watching him stammer and try to tell me the color was a riot in itself. Hes like holding his hands out like he was holding it and was stammering "I was just holding it YESTERDAY!!!! And....I don't know what color it is!!!!!!!!!" LOL
And if this thing is an original P bass I don't know what I will do. I mean yea I will grab it but I will feel so badly at the same time. Hes asking way less then its worth and thats an understatement. I don't know what I will do to be honest. And the sad thing is hes in such bad health and is so broke right now.
But Im pretty broke as well and the money for it is going to be a steep order to fill considering Ive got a Cowpoke to pay for in a couple of weeks too. Yeah I'm interested in this one too ...

Something does not seem right with that one. The least of which is the logo 'sticker' on the headstock....and the fretboard wear looks too 'set'. Same with the 'buckle rash' on the back....this one just seems 'off' for some reason. Or is it just me?

Yea thats about right. I think thats no original Pbass in that auction but a worked over reissue if you ask me. I could be wrong but it just doesn't look 'right' you know?
And I hope I will have pics to post tomorrow. I have no idea now what I will be looking at. Everything Ive relayed here is what Ive been told about it. But when its all said and done, theres no telling whats going to be sitting there waiting for me to see tomorrow! Whatever it is, I will definitely let you guys know!! ^_^ And thanks for the good luck!!!
Maybe you should pop a valium before going over there....just in case. You wouldn't want to faint dead away in front of the guy. That might be a bit obvious.
LOL Well seeing the Fender logo on it will get me started, then once I see which era the bass is from -- depending on which decade its from will depend on how hard its going to be to stay nonchalant about it. I gotta show the right amount of interest without drooling all over myself if it is indeed something really hot. LOL
So if it has a maple fretboard, then it could be either 70's or 50's (no maple boards in the 60's).
The headstock logo on the 50's would be silver 'Fender' in the spaghetti font with thin print on Precision Bass, and the tuners turn backwards. The 70's logo would be heavy black font on all the lettering, and the tuners turn in the normal direction.
