70s Robert Palmer...Who knew?

I always thought of Robert Palmer as a musical chameleon who was never pigeon holed in any one genre and I liked that. No matter what he did or who he recorded and performed with, it was always a professional, top-notch effort.

Here he is in 1978 performing "Every Kind Of People" live on the Midnight Special TV show.

Wouldn’t that be the other way around? Robinson/Crowes were a throwback to a particular type of blues-influenced British rock of the very late 60’s/early 70’s...Stones, Faces, Humble Pie, Free...as well as VJ and a host of similar bands(like Tucky Buzzard, Juicy Lucy, and Stone The Crows)who didn’t get much exposure in the US but were part of all that...

OK, so I'm late to the game.

But his 70s stuff is stupid good. Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley album has The Meters, Lowell George, Steve Winwood, Gordon Edwards, Bernard Purdie.... a who's who from that era.

And don't forget Bernard Odum on some of the Sneakin' Sally tracks...

I'm a bit late to this party too. I had no idea, until recently, that Robert Palmer did such a funky album with all these cool cats backing him. I've listened to it on repeat about 4 times today. There's some great info about Sneakin' Sally Through The Ally at Link Removed and Link Removed

I guess you could say he was good enough to get guys like Windwood and Lowell George and Cornell Dupree in board. That’s pretty good.

The "models who mime" series of videos was definitely an unvarnished wink-nudge at the whole MTV thing, but his arrangements and unorthodox takes on how he covered songs were rock-solid work. The whole Don't Explain LP is end-to-end brilliance.
