I bought this bass about 20 yrs ago from a pro player who "played the snot out of it in the 80s" (his words), but he put it away for several years and the Florida coast air corroded it to the point it was unplayable.
I cleaned the rust up enough (tuners, bridge) to get it playable, but the frets were really worn down so I haven't played it much, not at all since before covid.
So the other day I decided to pull her out to noodle around a bit, then thought "lemme try some flats on here". Whilst changing strings I noticed that the vast majority of the fretwear is between the strings, not underneath the strings - although there's scalloping there, just not to the same extent.
Can anyone explain this?
If you can zoom in, you'll notice that the frets are most worn out where the finish has also been worn out, presumably by fingers.
The wear is worst between the second and fifth frets, not as bad at higher frets.
