BTW this guys is a good friend, he just don't have any idea of what he should asking for.
I've just spoke with him and he agreed to lower the price to match eBay pricing.
The bass is in Rio/ Brazil.

Those ebay prices were largely for original late 70's Sabres. Make sure to let him know he does not have a 79 sabre but an 80's parts bass which will have a much much lower value.

$900ish would be fair for this parts bass (non-original). The body and neck are from two different eras at Musicman.

I have a '79 Sabre. That's no '79 Sabre, or it's heavily modded. I'd put it's value near $800.

Sheesh... and I remember how my first "how much is my Sting Ray worth" thread got shut down before a single dollar sign got posted. But despite CFclef's admonishment those price extimates keep on a'flowin...

I think it's fairly obvious that it's not his bass and he is not selling it. That is what they are trying to avoid, non-supporting members using "what's it worth" threads to basically sell their bass on the board without contributing.

Hey, I don't mean to sound like a jerk but I don't get that impression at all. In fact, I would not be surprised to see this listed on eBay in a bit...with a much less ridiculous price.

Shrigg, I too was given a reprimand within 10 minutes after posting something similar, though I was trying to steer away from a "what's it worth" thread...still got a violation though. I'm surprised this one hasn't.

OK, I can understand that. Let's see... Sabre body + pickups, although the pickup covers may be non-originals. Stingray neck, possibly non-original fingerboard. Pretty good shape overall, 7.5/10 it looks like. I would say $800-$1000ish. Sound about right?

I don't see it being worth more in parts. A P with a different year neck or even a J neck sure, there are thousands of those in almost any given area. Even with the mismatched year parts this could be a great player and the fact is these are great sounding basses (at least to me, I used to have one and wish I still did). I could see this being sold in the 850 to 1200 range, but anything beyond that is just silly.

I'm sure it is a great player, all of them I've played have been. I'm also a lucky owner of a 1980 Sabre in impeccable condition.

It's very hard to find Sabre necks, so that's what'll keep the value down as a whole instrument and simply be a players bass at this point.
But parted out, a vintage StingRay neck will fetch 600-700 bucks alone.

No doubt! I've got two old P necks (68 and 71) that I've been holding onto because of their increasing value. Old necks are worth big bucks these days!

I believe the pickup covers are original. But, I don't think they affect the value of the bass one way or the other.

Well, just to make it clear. I don't own this bass and I'm not trying to sell it. Just want to know if it was a real 79 Sabre as I'm not an expert on pre EB instruments.
