Amidst all the incessant mainstream media blather MSNBC is famous for there is this article about how America's tastes in beer has changed over the years. Interesting since these are precisely the beers I refuse to drink; nowadays I prefer fuller-flavored beers over the flavored water the big boys brew.

Yeah, when their buzz words like "drinkability" means essentially "kinda beer flavored water drink" and cite it a positive, I'm out.

I like a beer that actually tastes like something, and not the equivalent of watered down kool aid...I always used to hate when my parents got that wrong.

Good to know that American beer taste is evolving. Used to annoy me being considered a "beer snob" when the real old styles of beer are the true standards. After all, you're not a burger snob if you'd rather have 1 thicker burger from the grill than 3 "beef" patties from McDonalds, right?

Perhaps the big macro companies will simply also evolve and make real beers once again. Many companies make pre-prohibition style American lagers, which aren't too far from what most breweries sold back in the day, given the strong German heritage.

For those relatively new to beer, WWII brought about grain rationing, which is why the breweries that survived prohibition were using rice and other adjunct ingredients. Given that many hadn't had a beer in so long, they forgot how beer was supposed to taste. Light beers became popular and were a gold mine because they honestly contain next to nothing in terms of ingredients, which is why they became so profitable.

Most of the beer was made IN my house.

I like to support local products whenever possible. My usual "rule" is to try to drink beers from my area or in the bordering states, which is my excuse to drink Colorado beers.

By the same token, I just can't enjoy a "five mountainous bushels of hops per bottle" claim micro brews either. Something full bodied but relatively easily swallowed purleeeeze.

Newcastles, Sammies, Red Hooks, Red Stripes, Whitbeirs... yum a dum dum.

That list seems small. I would add pabst, coors, natural ice, (all the lime/lemon flavored versions of domestic beers) natty light, and the keystone flavors.

Fortunately there's plenty of variety. From time to time, I'll take something that's as much hops as they can throw in a batch. The Europeans really hate how much we (ab)use hops due to the sheer abundance.

These probably have dwindled as well, but are still very popular for the lets get drunk cheap crowd.

I would have added Rolling Rock to the list (or I wish I could have!). I had one at my brother-in-law's house twenty or so years ago, and it was so bad-tasting I couldn't even finish it! My brother-in-law doesn't have much taste, he even drinks Moxie!

Not sure if you're replying to the OP or not, but Pabst actually sells really well at the rock clubs down here. Bars sell it by the can, presumably, because it's only worth drinking if you can look ironic doing so.

Being from Saint Louis, I enjoy Budweiser and bud select. I also like european beers and microbrews. I think you're allowed to enjoy both.

PBR is definitely a strong "alternative" at local pubs here.

Once in a very long while I get a Bud and actually enjoy it as a counterpoint to my usual microbrews.
