8 String Ibanez Iceman Bass - oh yeah.

Wonder if banjo tuners would work, that'd save some space.

Edit:
Don't you think it'll be neck heavy?
Oh, yeah, I've seen a new version of that kind of tuner, made for guitar, though, might've been Steinberger? I forget, I saw it in one of the luthier catalogs (stewmac, likely).
Edit, yeah, these guys:

Though their dulcimer tuners might work too.
I always liked the way Ric alternated the tuners on some of the 12 string guitars, right angles from each other.

There's already a guitar version. Called a 'fireman'. Designed by Paul Gilbert.
Oh, man, yeah, this is so close to what I was drawing:

Even figured I'd run an inner cross piece of wood inside the body along the diagonal from the (now) upper horn to the bottom by the controls (just to make sure that's not too thin). ;)
:bassist::hyper:

But it's a set neck, hard to convert. It'd be a real hoot to make one into a "long scale" UBass with those synthetic strings and a piezo bridge!

But it'd be easy enough to carve that out from a leftie Iceman body blank (I think).

You know, looking at this I think you're going to have to move all the tuners north if you want to tune it e/E,a/A,d/D,g/G. Looks like there's plenty of space for that though.
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, but this guy's worked miracles... :)
