8 String Ibanez Iceman Bass - oh yeah.

Hey Fellow TB'ers,

I've decided to resume my bass conversion activities, and this is going to be the next project. I've successfully converted two 80's Ibanez RB850s to 8 string (octave) basses, and more recently converted an epiphone Pro V thunderbird to a Stunning 12-string Bass. I've always liked the iceman shape, and think it will make a really cool 8 string.... Now to find a nice cheap used one!! I'll keep you all posted...

Oh, there's plenty of room. That peg head is huge. It's going to be awesome!
Yeah, there's room, but I'm not sure the new tuners will fit between the existing ones - may have to move the A and D further out to make everything fit. Or take the other approach, and anchor the new strings in the head, and put the tuners at the back end.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing / hearing it!

Because they're the smaller les paul style guitar tuners, they actually fit without modding the existing tuners. So really it is just drill 4 new holes, install guitar tuners, cut a new nut, replace the bridge, adjust the neck and it's done. It should be pretty straight ahead... Unless there are tension issues with the neck. I don't think there will be... That's the one wild card.

Oh yeah, there's more than enough room for 4 guitar tuners on that head.
Looking forward to seeing it.

Apropos of nothing, I've always wanted to have an all-white Iceman. Front pickup only, and only one volume knob on the upper 'horn' like where the pickup switch on a Les Paul would be.
Then put it on the longest strap you've ever seen. So long you wouldn't be able to reach the controls in the traditional spot.

Note, I mostly play electric upright in a jazz/funk band. I know, I know.

Cool idea!

I've been toying with a similar thought, and Warmoth offers the parts to make it an easy (though pretty expensive) build.
I've used their custom builder and always come in around $1200.
There's a US seller on ebay selling the same kits Bulldog in Australia does, there's an Iceman kit in there - not the same quality, but way cheaper, they seem like fun - I just ordered the big box single cut hollowbody bass kit this afternoon, we'll see...
