80s Bass guitars

full?d=1456844370.jpg

My mid 80's Ibanez/Modulus prototype with graphite neck.

ok, I joined an 80s band. I love the music of the 80s. The band has great Musicans and should be a lot of fun. I play a 2008 mia P bass. A very standerd bass my back up is a Jazz. What would be your ultimate 80s bass?

I was thinking a Musicman Stingray. What do you think?

'80s? NO NO NO NO -

Think POINTY and BLACK. Sadly, few of those are really nice basses - but there are a few. I had a MIJ Charvel that wasn't a bad 4 string - needed better pickups / hardware, but the neck was straight. And it as black and pointy as hell!

What Ibanez model is this?

This model was never released to production. It's literally a prototype.

According to my research, around '84 or '85 Ibanez was thinking about getting into the graphite neck craze. So they ordered a lot of 200 guitar and bass necks from Modulus. These necks do not have truss rods. They were pieced together various parts in the shop. Mine appears to be mated with a Roadster II body and not very precisely. The neck pocket is about 1/8" wider than the neck heel. But other than cosmetics and lack of easy neck adjust-ability it plays and sounds great.

Most of these guitars were given to professionals to try on the road. Jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan used one as one of his main guitars for a time. Employees also ended up with them. I bought mine on eBay around 2005 and have no idea who it might have belonged to before me.

Surprised it took so long for Status and Steinberger basses to be namechecked. Quintessential '80s for me. When headless was both the present and the future.

Never thought about it in these terms but it turns out all my main basses an '80s retro tribute collection... two Wals and an Aria Pro II SB700... Yup, I AM a 1980s throwback. Now where are my shoulder pads and where can I get a Flock of Seagulls haircut done?
