Nigel Griggs: super melodic, very tasty.
Eric Avery: saw them live in Charlotte in '88 right before they broke big (actually provided production for them), that guy was bad ass!

Somebody mentioned Tears for Fears earlier - that was Curt Smith. It's my understanding that he made pretty significant contributions on their early stuff, but was overshadowed by Roland Orzibal as time went on.

Pino Palladino made an appearance on the Sowing the Seeds of Love CD (as did Phil Collins on drums, for that matter...)

Curt, on the other hand, doesn't get mentioned much as a bass player. He seems to often be relegated to the Art Garfunkel / John Oates category of musicians.

I wonder if this is because he is

A. Unknown;

B. Irrelevant;

C. Inept; or

D. All of the above?

I am a big 80's fan, that is when I grew up and was most influenced. People like JT and Mark King were such big influences on me and still are.

They actually started out in 1978, but let's call them 80's. I've been listening to my XTC cd's in the car all this week. The bass player's name is Colin Moulding. The guy really has some inventive bass lines and great sound. Give them a listen if you are blowing the dust off your 80's cd collection one day and find some XTC in there. In particular, give these tracks a listen:

Another Kyle Henderson fan here.

Most of my favs have been mentioned, but I have to mention Bryan Smithwick of the brains in here. This guy had a monster tone you could never hide in a mix and quite often drove the melody as well as holding down the bottom end. Dancing Under Streetlights is a pretty good example of what I mean.
