There's not a lot I can add to this discussion; however, while I was reading most of the comments here, something came to my mind.
This might sound trivial, but I'm somewhat impressed.
In my personal experience - not just on the internet, but esp. in real life - you yankee folks sometimes seem to have the tendency to glorify everything American while, at the same time, being strangely uncritical towards your way of life. As I said, this is part of my personal experience, not a general fact.
I have been lectured numerous times by Americans on many different issues, despite the fact that the person talking to me very often had only very superficial and very limited knowledge. One guy seriously tried to explain to me why health care in Germany sucks, altough he clearly knew nothing about it. Nothing as in "zero."
This critical discussion here is somehow like a ton of fresh air.
This won't help anybody who suffers from whatever illness, but I really had the urge to say this.
