I'm not really a fan Squire. Why should Flea be? He plays completely different music. He complimented him, he didn't say anything he shouldn't have. It was just flea being Flea. The video was funny.

I have met Chris Squire (back when I was in a YES tribute band about ten years ago). I chatted with him about the Ric 4001CS bass I had at the time. Chris is a nice fella. He asked me about the sound of the signature Ric bass, and my respectful response was, "it sounds good, but when I play mine it never seems to sound as good as when you play yours." He smiled.
And btw, I did not have to have a bass neck used as a suppository to meet him.
Relax dude, Flea has a sense of humor, and I bet Chris Squire has one too.

When I was a kid and discovered that I could play well a teacher taught me not to be too "busy". "Play for the song, no one likes a busy bass player".
It was good advice and served me well over the years. Someone should have told Flea to calm down a little. But seeing as how the singer is lame and the guitar players have all been hacks I guess someone had to step up. Can't freaking stand the band, the music or the busy bass player.

whats with all the Flea hate? RHCP is an important band, like them or not. And Flea may be a sloppy player, but he's laid down some great lines over the years. And he's a pretty funny actor to boot.
No one likes a busy bass player? Then why is RHCP one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and Flea perhaps the most popular bass player? If everyone had your attitude no one would ever try anything different and we'd all be stuck in the Stone Age. Plus, the guy can flat out groove, and can do it without slapping all over the place. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a modern masterpiece of pocket bass playing IMO.
I mentioned Geddy because despite melonthief inferring he doesn't approve of 'busy' bass playing, he lists Geddy as an influence in his profile. Just seems a bit of a contradiction I'd like him to expand upon.
To say you don't like RHCP is fine, but to dismiss Flea for his 'busy - ness' but to list Geddy as an influence?
And yes, BSSM is a master class in groove. Even if you think the guitarist is a hack.

i thought Flea came from a punk/hardcore background? that little run he does at the end is pretty good 80s hardcore bass sound IMO

Back when I was in high school I put a penny on the railroad tracks, waited for the train to flatten it, then filed it into a bass pick. It was a gimmick. I didn't even play with a pick and it was super bright and wore out the strings quicker. But it was cool to show off to people.
I have to go now. Geddy might be stopping by for a beer and I have to figure out how to fit my Ric's headstock up my ass.

In defense of Flea AND the Flea bass...
I think those were intended for small children to play. I am not aware of a full-size Flea bass - maybe there is.
I would see a few 3/4-size (30") and 1/2-size (25.5") basses hanging on the wall, for sale, at Flea's Silverlake Conservatory.
Perhaps this was an attempt to get kids to play electric bass at age 6 or 7 - following the fractional violin method.
Nothing more uncomfortable than an 8 year-old with a full-size bass. Not to mention bad for their fingers, hands, wrists and arms.
My then 7 year-old kid started on a 1/2-size Mini Corsair bass.
