a couple questions about amps

i am a relatively new bass player and talk bass member and i have a few questions about amps

the only amp i have had has been a crappy johnson something or other i bought when i got my first bass, i want to get a new one and dont knwo exactly what to look for.

what kind of amperage is best? for now i am not playing gigs or anything so i dont need butt-loads of watts, but i want it to be relatively powerful, my amp now is only 30 i think and my bass sounds sorta crappy coming out of it

i guess i am looking for reccomendations, i need it to be semi portable, i am a strong guy ( i like to think) so i dont mind it its big, but i need to be able to carry it, my price range, i could spend in the neighborhood of $1000, if i could find cheaper though, i would obviously jump at the oppurtunity, i could go over if i thought it was going to be a super fantastic mega deal, but i would prefer to keep it under $1000,

thanks for reading,

robert

300 is kind of a standard minimum, but depending on the loudness level you want, you could get away with less or more. It's rare you'd run a 1000w amp full volume, or even 300, but it's good to have some power behind you just in case you need to play loud sometimes. My personal favorite head in that price range is the Markbass Little Mark II. Add a good used cab for $350 and you've got a pretty substantial rig for a grand.

With $1000 to spend, you have a LOT of choices. I'm partial to the Eden Nemesis line - fantastic amps for the money IMO. You could probably get something like a Nemmy RS410 and never need anything else. You may be able to find one of the Nemmy NA combos at clearance prices since they're no longer being manufactured. I have an NA650 and I'm very satisfied with it.

Flawed, At G.C., Check out the new line of Acoustics.... Acoustic B200H head (200 watts)....$249.00....Acoustic 410H cabinet....$299.00.....Acoustic 115H cabinet....$199.00. Their inexpensive, seem well made, and sound pretty good.
There's also the Acoustic 200 combo, 200 watts, 1-15" speaker and a horn....$349.00.
