Rather than bother doing a web search, I'll just turn to the pinnacle of collective knowledge on the internet: TB OT. Every so often my male dog briefly gives off an odor that can only be described as that of a seafood shop after the power has been out for a week in 90-degree weather. The female I've had for 5+ years has never had this problem. He is about 1-1.5 years old, so it may be a hormonal thing, but he's neutered, so I wouldn't think so. What could be causing this and how do I stop it? We're going to the vet in about two weeks, so I will check then, but was hoping TB may be able to guide me to a temporary solution.
It's his anal glands. Really good article here: http://www.dfordog.co.uk/article-empty-dog-anal-glands.html I've had dogs where I've never really had this issue, and one now where it seems to happen a lot. Many groomers will empty the gland when the dog is there.
You ever see your dog dragging his a$$ across the carpet? Pretty good indicator the gland is full and should be drained.
Supposed to be a seaonal reference in a proper haiku. Try this: Doggy anal secretion. Carpet stinks of week old fish guts. The autumn breeze wafts the smell through the reeds. Seriously, let the dog out for a while. He'll usually take care of it.
encircle tail at base with thumb and index finger. Your digits will come to rest just adjacent to the little brown puckered ring below the tail. Gently push your finger tips toward the front of the animal then try to push them together with the top portion of the ring between them. Do NOT do this while standing directly behind the animal. oh and BTW, chronic butt dragging is more often a sign of intestinal worms (embarrassing rectal itch) than of an overloaded anal gland.
