A drummer started learning bass?!

Yeah. Thats me. Hi.

Mainly a 17yr old drummer with a little over years of experience, but a while ago me and couple musician friends had a small idea to make a new band with the roles a bit switched. So I started to play a little bit and I have to say that I quite like it.

I've been bass for...uh....about a month now, haha.:p
But yeah, it is fun.

Right now Im not a very...well...active learner, since next to school and drums I dont have much time, but I play when I can. For the new band, we started covering some simpler old rock'n'roll songs, Hey Joe, Highway to hell, etc.

My main goal would be being able to make live d'n'b all by myself. (Which means...drums, bass, synth and so on.) A bit different from what I play now, yeah.:D

But yeah. I hope I can learn all sorts of stuff from this forum.

We have another new player that's a drummer w/ a thread going right now.
I play Guitar, Bass and am now learning Drums. Just got a new dw set I'm trying to set up. I'm used to having mounts on the Bass Drum for 2 toms, I have to use stands on this one and I'm trying to figure out where to put all the legs so they fit like I want them.:hmm:

Welcome to TB, Martin.

I played drums for 16 years before switching to Bass. I enjoy seeing things from both perspectives, as a drummer and a Bass player, and I do think knowing both has helped me to become a better player.

And AxtoOx....a DW set. Damn. ..if I had the money...:D
Maybe get a double tom stand? I think DW makes them. But with it the toms need to be offset from the bass drum.
As I understand, you want to keep the toms over the bass drum?

It's a six piece Natural Satin. I have one double tom stand for the 14 and 16. Single tom + cymbal for the 10 and one crash, they didn't have another one of those so I have a double tom for the 12. Double cymbal for the other crash and ride. Plus the hi-hat and snare. Oh, and a 5000 double pedal.
I have legs ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Sweet, AAX's sound awesome. I myself have K Custom crash, Hand Hammered ride and Paiste 502 hats, which I want to replace as fast as I can.:(

Have you thought about getting a rack?

P.s. To keep this thread a bit bass-themed too, right now Im playing somesort of Ibanez P-Bass, if Im correct. (I think its a P-bass.) Sadly, its very old and not mine. It belongs to the place, where we practice and lots of young bassists pretty much rape that bass. :(

I was a drummer for a long time and always loved bass but I was too intimidated to start learning until now. Your making a smart move while your young. Practice and practice, I can't put this thing down. Because of their sense of rythymn drummers make some of the best bass players.

I made the switch at 17 as well. I had played drums since the 5th grade and was taking lessons from a pro. I started teaching myself bass my senior year. By the time I got to college I was playing drums in a band and was also in the music department's Percussion Ensemble. But I was playing bass CONSTANTLY and it wasn't long before I decided to make it my main instrument.

I still try to keep up on drums but I'm nowhere near as good as I used to be. But it was invaluable to have perfect time as a beginning bassist... just had to learn those pesky notes!

Only downside... when you're the bassist in a band and you're a better drummer than the drummer.

My advice - practice like crazy and stay sharp on drums. Try to learn guitar as well, you'll need to play with them in a whole new way.

Thanks! Yeah, Im planning to learn the basics of guitar too someday. Maybe during the summer. Right now, 2 instruments are enough for me, haha. (And yeah, the band, where I play the bass, Im better than the current drummer.:p But that is because he is a guitarist mainly and only lately started to play the drums.)
