Not sharing many details here as I still have to discuss with the luthier, but just got my custom today...
Side and fingerboard dots aren't a straight line (it's fretless, and also has the tiny dots on the FB like an F Bass).
Pickup is not centered with neck (pole pieces aren't centered under strings, obv), and I did measure, it's almost an 1/8" off the centerline of the neck.
The carve of the butt is not very smooth, and thus, the veneer layer doesn't look great and straight.
I didn't see a return policy (obv it's custom), just something about defects in workmanship. He did everything to my specs, but not at an acceptable level of quality. I'm kinda surprised, as I've heard lots of good things about this particular guy. The guy's been great to work with, I don't want to insult him, but these aren't little cosmetic things... I can see it every time I play the bass. Thing sounds and plays great, but for a 2.8k bass, I feel like this is disappointing . If this were a 1000 dollar bass, I wouldn't be so disappointed.
Is this being too nitpicky? Anyone ever get a custom and not happy with some element? How did you make it right? I've been so happy with all my other customs that cost about the same with none of these issues, so I just don't know what to think. I'm going to get in touch with him tomorrow and want to approach it respectfully and clear-headed.
Any suggestions?
(Update - I played the bass for about three or four hours tonight. It does sound and play really good. Just wondering whether to not worry about it.)
