A few Qs for the speaker experts.

I have an old SWR Triad cabinet. I like it a lot. It's just right for the gigs I've been doing lately. The 15" speaker in it finally blew and I need to replace it.

Q#1 - Can you suggest a good replacement speaker?

Q#2 - Do you see any problem with putting a neo in this spot to lighten my load?

Q#3 - I never use the tweeter in this cab (or any other cab that I've had.) Would there be any downside if I just removed it? And, if I did remove it, would I need to put some kind of load (an inductor coil or something) in its place?

1. Eminence Beta 15a if you're on a budget, Eminence Kappalite 3015 (not the 3015LF but the regular 3015) or Faital 15PR400 if you're not (the 3015 is darker but has a great overall response, while the Faital has very bright highs for a 15").

2. They seem to work with a whole lot of cabs the size of your typical 15", so while it might not be absolutely perfectly tuned, I've heard a lot of people reporting good results using them in similar cabs.

3. The only downside to removing the tweeter is plugging up the hole, but that's an easy fix. And piezo tweeters don't do enough to the impedance of a cab to affect it, so just plug the hole and you're good to go.

The Kappalite is a little out of my budget at this time. I will definitely look at the Beta 15.

So if I remove the tweeter horn all I have to do is cover the opening? No ill effects on the crossover from removing what ever load the tweeter has?

You'd have to remove or disconnect the filter that goes along with the tweeter. Playing through a crossover that doesn't have it's driver connected can show a short to your amp. And yes, something has to plug the hole. The easiest thing to do is just leave the tweeter mounted there even though it's disconnected.

Legend CB158 is another to add to your driver choices. Smoother lowend than the Beta, good performance and is friendly towards various cab sizes and tunings. The Beta will give you a bump in the lows if that's what you're looking for.

There are few TB threads on the Triad crossover, including pictures. I also found a schematic on another forum. It appears to be two high pass sections: 1st order to the mid driver, 3rd order to the tweeter. That's it, no low pass sections at all as far as I can as discern. You should just disconnect the entire tweeter network, which requires one simple snip. Just pulling the fuse or the tweeter creates a near short at the crossover frequency or somewhere fairly near it, which is potentially bad for your amp. PM me and I'll walk you through it.

Beta may still be a reasonable option depending on his amp power and what kind of flavor he likes in the lowend. Something about the crossover in these is incomplete, maybe there's no filter taking the topend out of the woofer or something. 3015lf has a pretty nasty spike where our ears are more sensitive. May not sound that great without some crossover mods.

One TB thread discussing just that. Everything I can find says the 15 runs full range.

HI....i am searching everywhere in the world (online of course lol) for some information on the swr triad. i recently bought one and need to know A..the wattage and ohms of the 15, and B..the ohms and wattage of the 10. really really hope you can help and also any advice on replacement drivers etc. cheers:hiding:

i have heard way too many different do and donts regarding speaker replacements for tjis triad of mine so its going to the dump..(seriously) swr so called customer service is a croc. you would think that a company that makrs amps that cost the earth (in britain anyway) would have its act together. im buying a hartke hydrive 4x10 and **** swr
