A G&L To Avoid

Just a PSA to the bass community. I bought [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] from GC last week, and after I got it home I relaized the truss rod nut was stripped. Returned it the next day with no problem, they even refunded the shipping cost.

Listed in EXCELLENT condition, and it is, if you ignore that glaring problem...
Was the rod stripped or the rod adjuster nut?

There can be some issues with replacing the truss rod nut:

1. If it's a newer G&L, it will have a dual action truss rod. On that, the truss rod nut cannot be removed since it's soldered onto the truss rod. That includes both USA and Tribute models. I'm not sure when G&L switched to that, but you can probably find out at www.bassesbyleo.com/forum, or perhaps someone else here on TB knows.

2. Even if it's an older model with a single action truss rod, removing the old, stripped-out nut can be a problem. I used one of these on the truss rod nut on my '07 SB-2:

3. Putting an extra washer or even two under the truss rod nut can be a solution on a single action truss rod, but be very careful. Doing so can actually split the fretboard up around the first fret.. It happened to me with my SB-2, and I've heard of others who have had the same problem. However, it can work if you're cautious. Do not over-tighten the truss rod, and lube the nuts and washers before installing.

4. I never found a washer that fit. Either it had a hole big enough to go over the truss rod but was too large to fit in the slot, or it fit in the slot but the hole in the washer was too small to fit over the truss rod. Some modification to a washer might be necessary. There might be some players here on TB who can tell you where to find the proper washers. I just used ones from my local hardware store and ground them down a little.

Fender sells a little bag of the right size ones for cheap money.

A damaged used bass from GC?......SHOCKER!

I've bought two used G&L Kilotons from them online...one shipped from GC Katy, TX and one from GC Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Both times, I called the manager of the store, had him pull the bass and give me his opinion. Both basses are fantastic. The last one from GC Rancho Cucamonga, CA was listed as "great" condition, but honestly it's like new. It really is a crap shoot, isn't it?

I'm joking of course but GC is just know for posting "Excellent" quality and you get a bass that looks like its been through a punk show. They have a very fair return policies though but it sucks to get duds, I got a Stingray from them from the used and they claim it was amazing, BUT had all notes, drawings written in it, two major cracks, and tons of permanent pen notes on it... Yeah the GC guy understood me instantly when I brought it in to return LOL.
