Today, I was searching the internet for I the DG Harmonic Booster and found a copycat. I wonder how good/bad the copycat is?

This is the first time I have seen clone/copycat/fake Dark Glass pedals.

Further searching found that DemonFX has copies of almost all the Dark Glass pedals. They even sell them on Amazon. I have tried my share of cheap pedals from Amazon and some of them are actually decent. Wonder if these fakes suck?

I had an FX25-B and spent so much time just trying to dial it in on my passive bass. Never really sounded good to me so I sold it. Actually it sounded pretty decent, but it was just so hard to get the filter to open up.

Maybe a boost pedal in front would have helped?

I'm a Laswell fiend and know he's used various DODs (I'm familiar with both the FX25 and the B) but didn't hear about the customization, do you have any details?

I've posted The Silent Land a few times here, the coolest ostinato bass line with harmonics ever. But unfortunately, no, I'm pretty sure I read it in a bass player mag article in the 80s, but it was without details. I think he had a modified whammy pedal too, seeing Painkiller in the 90s at Middle East Downstairs (Cambridge MA) I heard him make the lowest bass sound I ever heard amplified, I was standing next to a side bass bin and the note was so low you could almost count the cycles, like some low insect tick tick tick. (I also saw Massacre at the Boston Opera House in the 80s, recreated note for note, 2nd time I saw Fred Frith play, but never this virtuosic.) It seems pretty reasonable a DOD could be modified like a 50s automobile, replace a cap or something. Does Bill's "theme song" sound like a regular DOD? Or was it because it was direct to tape fretless P with a pick? My gfriend at the time was a dance teacher and used this for her dance classes.

I’d suggest a used Aguilar Filter Twin. I tried a handful of great filters, including the MXR, and this was by far my favorite. Most pedals were too quacky, stood out way too much in a mix, and/or were too finicky. But the filter twin just always sounds good no matter your settings or the bass you use. It doesn’t spike your volume but it also doesn’t get lost in a mix.



The Aguilar Filter Twin doesn’t only give you the option to switch the direction from up to down, it allows you to blend between them to any degree with a blend knob. Turn the knob all the way to the right and it’s an up sweep, turn it all the way to the left and it’s down, or set it to any varying degree in between for some really useful results.

Laswell’s DOD of choice has always been the rarer 545. The FX25 got connected with him at some point through internet lore, but AFAIK he never actually used an FX25 though it is an easier way to get a similar sound since the 545 is much rarer.

Never could get the MXR BEF to work great for me, the effect was always too subtle and lost in the mix. Probably mostly to do with my playing style, passive basses, etc. I’m liking a JoshWah by Broughton better but it too has been a little tricky to dial in. Want to try that Nano Q folks have mentioned.

Maybe? I sold it around 10 years ago so I'll probably never know.

gee, there are at least 3 545 available online right now...(vs about 15 FX25 and 25B), Reverb and Musician's friend. It's so early that the power jack is a 1/4", I haven't seen that adapter! we still have 9v batteries, I'm pretty sure.
