My first bass was a Squier Standard Jazz. It was around 250.00 new as I recall. I think this is the one:

I still have this bass and it is still a good player. I don't pull it off the wall too often as I am always playing P-basses but I do "play" with it on occasion and it stays in tune and still sounds good.
I think that if I had bought a P-bass to start, I might still be playing a Squier.
edited to add that this bass and my VM TB were the only basses I bought "new". I like new for a first bass in case there are issues that need to be resolved that might need a dealer or manufacturer (although I did not need them in my case).
