A good slap sound?

Dodgy Ian is right. It's not only about the tone, its about a good neck and low (non-buzzing) action.

+1

IME, "light" gauge strings are also helpful.

I have heard good slap tones from S.G.'s. IME, the easiest to slap basses I have played have been Guild pilots, S.G.'s, and believe it or not, a Ric.; so I think it is just as much the player as their signal path that contributes to the overall "tone".

In my own biased opinion, save up and buy a Cirrus off of someone here because used you can get them at a good price. Try one out before you do though... it doesn't suit every style.

I had an older Ibanez SR 1000 once.... old EMG's and everything, I had the same problem, then I didn't think and traded it for a cort fretless.... what a bad move

The meanest slap sound I've ever heard is from the Cirrus basses, especially the neck P/U soloed. Just listen to that worship bassist (what's his name, Randy Jackson, Jonson?).

Or listen to the intro to Bill Dickens website. Buddha!
That's performed on a Cirrus Redwood 6, with centered pickup pan though. (I know, that Cirrus sound is hard to miss when you hear it). And you can watch it too. :hyper:
