A list of nonsense

So as I enter middle age I'm thinking through a bunch of things and am making a concerted effort to battle nonsense in my life. Below is a list of things I consider nonsense in the music & gear world. Just opinions based on my experience!


How do y'all deal with nonsense?


1. Ordering instruments online

2. Having more than 4 of a given instrument (bass, guitar, keys, flute, etc)

3. Trying to get a perfect tone

4. Loud bands

5. Analog gear

6. Not recording myself and listening back

7. Thinking that my instruments sound significantly different from each other

8. Click tracks for small-time local performers

9. Band drama

10. Treating GAS like a hobby and not like an addictive behavior. Corollary, encouraging my fellow musicians to buy gear beyond the basic necessities

11. Debating *best* this or that

12. Thinking that my musical pursuits might change the world

13. Spending more than a half hour per day on gear forums

14. Buying things *just to see what they sound like*

1. The more I order, the better the chance of getting a really good one

2. Variety is the spice of life. Plus, see #1

3. I stopped trying

4. Ear plugs

5. Gear plugs

6. Why would I want to torture myself?

7. Yours don't?

8. How else are one man bands supposed to work?

9. Popcorn

10. They tried to make me go to rehab ....

11. There is no debate, only my opinion(s)

12. I gave up on that a long time ago

13. How else am I supposed to get GAS?

14. That's like buying food just to see what it tastes like ..

1. Ordering instruments online.
New? I don’t buy new.
Used? Sell it for what you paid for it.

2. Having more than 4 of a given instrument (bass, guitar, keys, flute, etc).
I was up to 17. I keep it below 10 now.

3. Trying to get a perfect tone
It doesn’t exist.

4. Loud bands.
I wear earplugs in quiet bands. I don’t play in loud bands.

5. Analog gear
All my gear is analog, baby.

6. Not recording myself and listening back.
I did 2 decades of studio work. I know what I sound like.

7. Thinking that my instruments sound significantly different from each other.
Ouch.

8. Click tracks for small-time local performers
I only play with solid drummers. The guitarist is the owner of a music school and has exceptional time also.

9. Band drama
We have none.

10. Treating GAS like a hobby and not like an addictive behavior. Corollary, encouraging my fellow musicians to buy gear beyond the basic necessities
I’m a collector of gigable gear.

11. Debating *best* this or that
Waste of time.

12. Thinking that my musical pursuits might change the world
It’s a hobby and creative outlet that pays for itself.

13. Spending more than a half hour per day on gear forums
I should be practising bass. Oops.

14. Buying things *just to see what they sound like*
Stupid for basses/Amps/cabs.Unless you live in a remote area. I’m in a huge city. Someone will have one I can try.
Smart for pedals as there’s no way to know with your full setup in a band context.

Not to brag, the only one that applies to me is # 5. That said, I have a ton of other nonsensical things in my life that makes up for it

Focus on #13. The rest will take care of itself.
