A local TB'er ripped me off!!

This ripoff is terrible news.

But I've always been baffled by the belief that someone who creates a free account on TB suddenly becomes inherently more honest than the rest of the planet.
You make a great point. Once after I had my account about a year, an Alembic owner and I were talking and since i'd never played an Alembic, he actually shipped me his Persuader to play, just for the experience. I couldn't believe it. He asked for no security, and after a few days I shipped it back to him. He seemed to enjoy doing that with other TBer's, and perhsps my perception was colored by that experience.

Dude, that's awesome. Yeah, there's a lot of cool people here and I have been blessed by the experiences here. I've been hooked up on many different occasions. I'm sorry that this happened to you man. :(

Next question: You say the rod is broken.......was it completely broken when you first inspected it, or did it break while you were trying to adjust it?
When i first went to adjust it, it was frozen. Not wanting to risk breaking it, I called Lakland and asked their advice. The tech on the ihine referred me to Carl Pedigo, evidently a highly regarded luthier in Chicago. He advised me to remove the neck and then remove the nut from the truss rod. Once I got the neck off, the nut unscrewed relatively easily, at which point it came off after only 3 turns. There was 1/4" inch of truss rod, the end being pointy and rusty. It obviously had been broken long before, and a different nut attached.

Oh that sucks. I must have bought, sold and traded more than three dozen basses and amps and innumerable pedals on TB over more than a decade and have never gotten screwed like that. I think most of us value our reputations and feedback and also the sense of community fostered by this site.

Did this guy have many previous transactions or positive feedback?
