A local TB'er ripped me off!!

I'm so sorry to hear that.. Disappearing from TB is very suspicious indeed. I'd do whatever I can so he can't get away with it but in the worst case I'd send the neck to Lakland and they'd know what to do with it. Keep calm and carry on.
Thanks for your good wishes, freq. I still have a line into his Reverb account, he hasn't disappeared from there at least.

I wonder if even Lakland can repair it. It doesn't offer any access except in the broken end, and I can't see how to remove it.

... so since he seems to have vacated the building ... what was his TB user name?

.. just FYI, the mods can restore any posting that has been deleted if you need the ad you purchased from in the future for any reason ... I once bought a bass on here that the seller lied about the modifications and the working status of components installed ... once I called him on it, he deleted the sale thread to avoid negative feedback ... I notified a mod of all the details, he checked the PM's and restored the ad to the classifieds ...

You say it turned 3 full turns then came off??? Then it can get 3 full turns back on(Carefully) and then maybe a couple more to have a pretty flat neck. To do this you must coax the neck to reveal the "tip" of the rods threads then gently and straightly reinstall the nut. I would shoot a tiny squirt of Aero-Kroil on the threads first.

perhaps, but number one, I can see thst the rod is broken, and number two, one shouldn't have to coax s neck to adjust its truss rod.

Sorry this happened to you. There is always one that breaks the code of honor, but know that you should feel comfortable knowing that the majority of the people here on TB are honest good hearted people.

I sincerely hope that you get in touch with the guy that sold you the bass and I hope he has some dignity left to spare in his life to do the right thing.

I've been in contact with him, and he just maintains the lie that he knew the truss rod to be in good condition and refuses to man up.

Actually it's standard practice to coax a neck back to reduce relief and tighten the trussrod nut just to hold it in position. Don't ever try to straighten a neck by tightening the trussrod, that's how trussrods get broken.

Also, always loosen the trussrod a bit before tightening it to make sure the nut is free.

Spoiler: this has no bearing really, but.....

Many years ago I was a high school kid pumping gas after school and on weekends. Over the course of a year doing so you get to know regular customers. One such came in who I knew on a first name basis. I must have served him 30-40 times over the year. After pumping, he said he was short something like 5 or 10 bucks. I naively said no problem, I'll see you in a day or 2, give it to me then. I never saw him again. People are strange and become even stranger with greed. :rollno:

Actually the neck is straight while at rest, I wanted a little forward bow.
I've always heard and read that truss rods are supposed to be relatively easy to turn, and that if it's hard, you shouldn't force it. As always, everyone's mmv.

Like the lawyer on The Greenile said..."maybe you can turn your back on a dog once, maybe a thousand times. But the one time can come when he bites you"....

Gotta have no soul to pull a scummy trick like that.

I'll never look at a sellers ratings the same way again.
If TB can't, or won't do something about this, then their reputation as a "buy, sell & trade" becomes sullied too. Most unfortunate.
That's how I feel about Reverb....they aren't being terribly cooperative. They make me feel like the one whose doing wrong. They asked for a photo, and after I submitted 3, they insisted that I take the beck to a luthier and get an estimate for repair..
