A while back I posted about running into Prakash John in the parking lot behind his gig.
The venue owner did not want another fiasco like the night (see my post-Canadian thanksgiving) before and pulled in a favour to get Prakash, who draws a more mature audience, and gets a heavy cover charge.
Yesterday in the food store I got a call about 2:00, can I mix FOH for Prakash, 6:00 load in, 8:00 doors. NOT a lot of time!
With no input list, or stage plot, I was ready when he got there. I pulled up a mix from the night before that I was really pleased with, and edited as I went. (Never delete a good mix!)
Prakash's rig- His '80 sparkle red B.C. Rich Eagle that Bernie built for him. Tec Puma 900, and an SWR goliath 4x10. A few pedals he used very sparsely.
Being the BL, he likes a mix bass heavy, with a lot of upper mid cut. I built a long curve toward 3K boosted about 4db. HPF at 35 htz. and a high compressor threshold, so only his peaks were tamed a bit. My meter showed a 4 minute avg. of 100 db, so it was loud.
Anyway- a bunch of consumate pros made mixing a breeze. They did all their own dynamics, and I sat and watched Prakash.
The band ran a repetoire of funk and R'n'B classics and blew the doors off the place! Prakash, having been with both James Brown, and Parliament Funkadelic has some serious funk chops.
I videoed his solo on 'Respect' but TB says the file is too large. Sorry. You can see it on my facebook page @soundbypaula
