But I get even more numeric and use semitones. So it runs 1 through 12 (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,X,Y,Z where X,Y, and Z are named “Dec”, “Del” and “Doh” as in base12 style) so I don’t need to think about sharps and flats.

Major = 158 Minor 148 and so on.

And i had programs that required more than one box (LFER modeling). Submitted at 8 pm and hope it ran overnite in the q with the quantum and astrophysics guys.

Shoulda done what I did and get in good with the operators and have them bump your priority in the queue. Or have an “understanding” with them that they never seem to catch the illegal JCL
card you put in the front of your stack that read:

//JOBA JOB 1,'some alias',PRTY=nn

Bringing coffee or munchies around to the night batching team works wonders sometimes. ;):laugh:

Was sorely tempted to do the same, but mu instructor would not approved. Base 12 has its benefits.
 
Calling Python “old school” seems weird now that it’s the primary language of machine learning and AI programming.

There’s little point in not using vintage machine languages if it gets the job done and the new kid on the block doesn’t confer immediate and use case specific advantages. Good ol’ COBOL is still a great language when you use it for what it was designed for - even if it is a little wordy at times. Same goes for FORTRAN. Both are still used extensively world wide. Ditto for FORTH. A huge number of automation and control systems are programmed using it. It’s clean, readily extensible, easy to program in, and easy to debug. An older proven language with an extensive and well debugged set of libraries is a joy to work with. Sure beats some object oriented language programs I’ve dealt with - where had to spend half your time mentally reverse engineering all the objects (along with their dependencies and inheritances) somebody else wrote) so you could begin to figure out what went wrong.

Least complex tool to accomplish the task efficiently is a form of elegance worth pursuing.

And yeah, Python is definitely a decent enough language. Easy enough that it even makes for a great “first language” to use with an intro to programming course. And it’s still bring actively being developed. Lots to like. :)
 
Anyway, back to the OP ;

Ive been blasting through the modes for years, but playing them as sequenced TRIADS in all major and minor scales was something that Gary Campbell turned me on to.

Definitely harder, and darn good ear training and opens new finger patterns to be discovered.

Very useful number base in that 12 can be evenly divided into thirds or multiples of 2.

Phoenicians supposedly came up with it along with the concept of a phonetic alphabet. As merchants and traders using 12 as your base came in handy since most businesses like theirs meant buying goods in large quantities and selling them in smaller lots. 12 has a decent selection of whole number base fractions that evenly divide into 12 to use.

Base12 gives you: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, 1/12.

Mr. Groot, thank you for posting this. So, how do I use this to practice? I am trying to (re)learn basic theory and trying not to sound like a noob. My goal is to get better at improvising in any key under a soloist; will these help? Thanks! :bassist:

Sorry if I sounded snippy.

The numbers represent scale degrees. If we chose the key of C;
1=C
2=D
3= E.....
8=C an octave up
9=D
10= E
11=F
12=G

b3 = Eb etc.

Set your metronome slow and play one triad per beat. Figure out the efficient fingering pattern that works for you. It is also ear training.

When starting out , just play ascending triad sequence and descending sequence. When you are comfortable with that, play all 8 sequences .

When just starting out. I strongly suggest you get a pencil and write a line of triads out. Then mark where you shift your hand. If you play OFPF, the shift is betweeen the 4 and 5th set of triads for a C major scale.

Old School? Hmpth. When I started working at the job I had from @ 2003 through 2014, the owner still did everything with real paper ledger sheets, real client account cards that each monthly statement and payment were typed in, a real general ledger book, and manual check depositing. He never changed. So yes, I was still sharpening pencils, literally, in 2014. We did finally get him to let us enter firm time sheet billing entries into a computer billing program so those did not have to be completely handwritten, and we could get out the bills in a timely manner. He did understand timely billing usually means timely payment. And finally, the firm accountant did insist everything be sent over in QuickBooks format, which meant I entered everything twice: once for the owner; once for the accountant.
