Amp....maybe shield, upgrade, do small stuff on the squier if its not too unbearable. If you severely need to upgrade, then get the bass

A New amp or a new Bass?

Acoustic makes some nice low cost combos. But my suggestion would be to keep an eye on the classifieds here and get something used. You'll get a lot more amp buying used than you will buying something new.
Before you buy the amp, look on craigslist. I bought a barely used GK 215 for half the price (500 watts). I was at a time when I wanted a bass amp, so I went on musiciansfriend.com and found a nice cheap one (100 watts). If you save your money a little longer, you could go on craigslist and maybe even find a better amp.
