A new bass built from different brands/good idea?

Ash body
Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard/24 frets (Sandberg made)
Rickenbacker 4003 neck + bridge pup
Rickenbacker 4003 controls + switch
Sandberg bridge
And last but not least: a Moog filter (not sure about this yet)

The body we'd build ourselves, the neck bought.

Any considerations you might have are very welcome as this is an adventure all new to us and eventhough we have the skill and material to finish this project off to a good end, we don't know just how this bass made from its different parts will sound, if it will even sound like anything. We sure don't want a dead or dull sounding bass.

If you're basing your use of Ric pickups on their "good looks", you're probably not targeting a specific sound so much as an aesthetic.

Build it, and you might be pleasantly surprised, or disappointed. But you'll have a good learning experience doing it.

i think there's no way to know if your build idea will sound good until you try it out and play it! i don't understand the hate; just 'cause it's a bass some people might not want to play, doesn't mean you shouldn't try to build the thing. Who knows, maybe it will sound great? Pickups are a pretty easy thing to swap out once installed, if you find you don't like them. Also, there are all kinds of frankenstein-style basses out there with a bunch of different parts. I have a Stratocaster just like that (although not a bass, the point is still there). I say do it, and let us know how it turns out!:bassist:

Called Sandberg yesterday! They're willing to sell me a finished Bullet neck and bridge. Still waiting on their price offer though. I'm still on the fence regarding the pups. On one side I fear that the sound may be too thin because of the two single coils, and two hb's would be a more preferable choice. But then the question of active or passive also comes to mind, and what type of onboard preamp. There's so many options out there and there's no way I can try them out for a long enough time to be sure what to get.

So tell me about the Rick pups and pots: how much do they colour the sound and do you have any experience with them?

After some searching I found that my idea of having a filter was a bit lame as you would need a battery per filter (didn’t think about it). The guys over at the Moog forum explained this to me, and the filter will just be an outboard MF101, not in the bass itself.

Still waiting on those guys from Sandberg to make me their offer.

For the pick ups I’m probably going to go with 2 passive humbuckers.
Haussel seems to be top notch from what I hear, and I don’t think Seymour Duncans are bad either. But if I want a passive bass with 2 humbuckers that has a lot of mids and bags of growl, what pick ups do you guys think would be appropriate?

Gave a Stingray with a 2 band preamp a test drive last weekend. There’s something I don’t quite like about its sound. It was set up pretty poor though. The guy recommended me the Ray HH, but I don’t know, at this time it’s just not doing it for me, there’s no spark.

So, throw in your thoughts!

You can use an ACG filter preamp on-board.
