A New Fender Coronado Bass?????

Hey, so it's come to everyone's favorite part of talkbass, speculation time!!!! oooo!!! ahh!!! Anyway, I was checking out random videos Fender takes and whatnot, and I found this little gem.

The guitarist looks to be playing a new Fender Starcaster reissue guitar, (exciting in it's own right, but not the point), but look behind and to his right. That right there looks like a spiffy new Coronado II bass. Now, it might just be me hoping, but I hope that Fender will say something about it by the end of the year... Oh, also, at the end there appears to be a starcaster headstock but with bass tuners, a Starcaster bass as well?? [Commence Speculation]

Oooh.. Well seeing fender own guild and guild have the reissue starfire, it's not too far a stretch.

And they also own gretsch, so it's not like they are new to the hollow/semi-hollow game. Looks like they have headstock truss rod adjustors, so possibly MIM or MIJ?

Reissued Starcaster is literally the only guitar that would ever cause me to buy another guitar. I have been content for quite some time. Dear god... my credit card...

A short scale Wildwood with decent pickups and electronics would garner a serious look.

Even a short scale not a Wildwood released in something other than sunburst or black would be worth looking at.

I think it is a terrible bass.

I have played a few and they all sounded thin, didn't balance well and felt cheaply made.

I have nothing against the Coronado II but the fact that almost no (or very few) top touring/recording bassists use one is a good indication of sound/playability.

EDIT: Damn it!!! previously I could not check the link at the starting entry, I've only seen the thread on my phone. Now that I see that, I cannot believe my own eyes: they are actually seriously doing it!!! They are reissueing the Coronado!!!! That is unbelievable!!!!!!!!

I'll give Fender kudo's for thinking retro outside the box for a change. The Jaguar bass was their first original concept in decades.

I have a '67 Coronado II and it's not my favorite bass, but to say it's terrible seems a stretch. I'm willing to bet that the ones you played had rounds and they weren't heavy enough. What you need on a short-scale bass like the Coronado are some seriously heavy flats. I've got 55/75/90/110s on mine and it's got plenty of low end. Probably the main reason you don't see touring bassists use them is that being fully hollow, it's prone to feedback at higher volume levels. That can be solved by putting filler, such as rubber, in the body, but why bother when there are other, more off the rack options?

I just thought about something - in some ways this apparent recent tact that Fender is taking (basses like the Jaguar "that never were") and now the Starfire Bass.., this in some ways seems reflective of what goes on here at tb on a daly basis, would you not agree? I mean, I don't want to get big-headed here but is there, or is there not some pretty creative concept builds (in general) and specifically related to Fender-like hybrids that your fellow bassplayers came up with in the Lutheier Corner thread? (just sayin...)

Like Fender cannot honestly say it launched the 1st P/J, or all these P/P,P/HM,HB/HB combo's, or J's with P necks or P's w/J necks - all of these "inovations" have been cultivated by Fender for years from the continuous flow of front-line DIY'rs in the background, whether professional players (and thier luthiers), or on tb or some other guitar/bass-centric site - they mine the street.

Leo was a leader - CBS and beyond, Fender was a follower. Maybe today Fender is a gambler. As long as they keep the quality high - I'll hang on their shoulder at the table.
