Huh? :eyebrow:
This is a commonly held view, but I can think of at least 7 or eight very distinct tones I get by varying my technique alone. Frankly, I'd rather do it that way than by twiddling lots of knobs. A lot of people assume the 'one trick pony' mantra is real, and it most definitely is not.
Whatever....make mine a Fender, please. Sunburst with a tort guard and rosewood board.

Meh. If your technique allows you to get 7 or 8 distinct tones out of something as one-dimensional as a P, then you could get 42 or 48 distinct tones applying the same technique to a Stingray 25th Anniversary HSS. This gets back to that can of worms about what creates bass tone, the instrument or the technique. To me it's like asking what makes a great painting, the tubes of paint or the artist's brush strokes? Naturally the brush strokes are a huge part of the equation. But if a great artist is stuck with a bucket of white paint and nothing else... well that's a challenge.

I've never understood why an artist would limit their palette, but I guess a case can be made for it as some sort of Zen-style discipline or whatever. If I were a painter, I'd want a tube of every color available.

Personally, if this law were passed I'd move to DB. I'd have a tough time copping the attitude, though.....

Yes. Or make sure they all have exactly the same finish :D

Which one would you keep in this horrible dictatorship?

I have 2 white ones if that counts for anything. I'd keep my 57 RI P-bass. Its a 1982 and I've had it for almost my entire bass playing career. Its been my main player through most of this time as well.

I have a bunch of other P-basses, but if I could only grab one if a fire, it'd be this one. (After I throw all the other ones out the window in an attempt to save them)

Pics are here, however I recently took both covers off after I broke one of the LaBella James Jamersons strings. I replaced them with DR Lo-Riders and this is maybe the second time I've ever had rounds on this bass. I still haven't put the covers back on yet and probably won't until these strings die and I get a new set of flats.:bassist:

i change my answer, id rock THIS!

GE - Thats probably in the top 5 of the coolest pbasses I have ever seen. (There is no order - they just all live on the same level of awesome)

Interesting to see some nods to Lakland. No doubt that their take on the pbass is world class. The Duck has the jazz profile neck too which I would go for.

I personally know I would want ash body/maple board as a combo. Even before seeing GE's pics, I completely love the 57RI look. I have a Lake Placid blue Atkinson which I love too.

My favourite all time bass builder is the Lowend but I am yet to try the LEP. I think I know enough about the quality of their builds to go for one of these - probably as a take on the 57RI.

Another vote for Lakland. In fact, I plan to order a US Glaub with a straight P pickup this year.

I already have a US Glaub with a Dark Star pickup and it's a fantastic bass in all respects. I own a few more Lakies as well and have been to the shop more times than I can count (and tried more than a few of their US basses).

They make my favorite necks, period. They have great finishes (courtesy of the amazing Pat Wilkins). And the US basses are generally been light and certainly resonant. All the elements I find important in a P bass.

For Tendollarcat, I present to you "Big Booty Girl" on the right.

Fender p-bass American Standard with the Graphite Reinforced Maple neck.

Easily fits my style (or lack thereof). It actually took me 21 years and countless basses to figure this out. Had one back in the 80's (with out the Graphite Reinforced Maple neck) and sold it. Did not even realize that was the sound I was constantly searching for until last month. I just need it simple otherwise I get lost...

+1 (kinda). Same as above but with a RW board.

I played P basses 20-25 years ago... bought and sold likely 50 basses including really expensive boutiques.... no I am back to Fender P's.

My bass is a Fender P. I may get GAS or "think" I need a 6 string boutique fretless or something stupid like that... I always seem to come back....

Hey Diglo,

Oh man. I love the look of that bass! I keep thinking about that Pbass passive tone with the (in my opinion) perfect LEJ neck profile. You'd have that awesome thumpy tone and slick, easy playability. Theres heaps of growl in LEJ pickups too.

In my future, I'm seeing a Lowend one-piece trans-white ash body, gold pickguard (57RI style) and a nice maple neck and board. I'd string it with Jamerson flats. GAS! I'd better get saving again :D

Hows your LEP going?
