A pre-gibson Tobias Classic or not

Interesting. I suppose the later ones, like mine, went with the vol/pan configuration and also had the detents on the low/mid/high.

Pete Skjold said that he had two Tobias', and think that one was earlier than mine (with mine being #766) and the other was later. At any rate, he recalled both of his having center detents.

My bass and treble are definitely cutting (as well as boosting), and I couldn't tell what the midrange was doing, but Bob's response makes sense.

I'll ask Michael when he gets back from vacation.

Bob, or anyone, do you know what the respective preamp controls should be on my Basic 5? One is obviously volume, one is pan, and then the bottom three appear to be treble, mid and bass controls, but they don't have center detents, and I don't know if they are boost/cut, boost only, or what. Also, I would have expected the mini toggle to be a midrange shift control, based on the current MTD layout, but it sounds like an active/passive switch.

Does anyone know for sure what these controls do? And if you knew the values of the treble/mid/bass controls, that would be helpful.

3/7/3 is roughly flat - Mid at 250....cool.


No center detents. Flat is about 3/7/3 they do cut as well…..the mid is centered at 250. Not sure about the rest….too long ago.

My pleasure. I had been emailing Mike about the particulars of the stunning #779 I just purchased and it occurred to me I should ask about the non-detent eq. 3-7-3 is flat. Who'd have thunk it?! LOL I always assumed it was just a volume control on each band. Glad I checked. I'm recording a lot right now and that's given me incentive to experiment. Of course this darn thing sounds so good and full passive the eq is almost unnecessary. Merry Christmas!

I have #708 which has Vol/Vol, Bass, Mid, Treble with no detents.

Yes!! I feel so lucky to find this thread. What a precious information here.

I bought Tobias Classic 5 #8xx last year and always have had feeling that something's not right with bass eq. Mine has 3 center detent Eq knobs with apparently newly changed pots (japan made Alps pots) and whenever I played with Bass eq centered or in "flat" position, it felt the bass was somewhat boosted, which made me cut a little bit. This thread tells me the reason!

Now I'm working on reviving(?) electronics as it was, additionally adding MCT-250. It's lucky that mine has original drop shoulder pups and TCT preamp.
