unfortunately I did not always have that opinion, hence the screen name. age has taught me that people who are busy talking about all the good that they have done are trying to cover up all the bad that they did, or have an inferiority complex. either way, it's illogical. I have pride in my accomplishments, but I don't advertise them just so people will like me. people who live their life seeking the approval of others aren't really living a life, IMO.

and if I could change my screename I would. I like my screename as much as I like that reservist at the bar wearing his OIF/OEF t-shirt; the only thing that comes out of his filthy sewer is rhetoric and hate speech.

I realize that you used quotation marks, but who are these "intellectuals" that have driven the idea of entitlement into people's heads?

with this in mind, nobody goes into any form of government service with anyone in mind but themselves, but if you're lucky, selfless service is a character trait that will stick to you.

Didn't seem like he was advertising his service just so people would like him. He said he joined the military. I did too and so did you. Best time of my life and I have a lot of pride for it. I didn't do it, nor do I recollect just for people to like me. I doubt you did either.

The reservist guy in the bar with an OIF/OEF t-shirt, he just has bad taste in t-shirts.:D I do get a little ticked when I see guys in uniform at the bar, after duty hours, asking for handouts. But, that's my opinion. :bassist:

This part of what is being said. It doesn't matter what has been driven (or not) into other peoples heads. They are not the people to worry about. There, said it without out using the word "I" . Oops just did, darn :hiding:

Just asking out of curiousity.
The idea of entitlement is not an intellectual one, which is most likely why quotations were used on the word.
As a person trying to be more selfless, its safe say that even those people are the ones to worry about.

I was trying to respond to the question and take up UncleFluffy's challenge and not use the word I. I'm not doing very good at that. In answer to your question the one person who's behaviour I want to concern myself with is mine,. (Yikes a lot of versions of I there). Of course as some may point out there are exceptions. If someone is pointing a gun at my head I am going to be concerened about their behaviour. I am also concerened about the behaviour of children I am responsible for.

i think parents may be quick to wonder what this concept of 'me' time is all about. ;)

another guy who discussed the development of the brain from completely selfish to stages of selflessness is larry kohlberg. i think his work on moral development is somewhat famous in education circles.

personally, i find duck dunn to be my main inspiration as a bass player. the music that came out of stax volt is my favorite. compared to him, i over-play at a ridiculous level. but i am working on it. growth, development, balance.

oh and patience....
