A Real Classy Lady

Long story short, this woman hits a couple teenagers with her SUV and kills one of them. The driver is found to be not criminally at fault and no charges are laid. She then turns around to sue the family of the boy she killed because she is now distraught. The parents got word of a $1.4 million lawsuit. Meanwhile, the brother of the dead boy overdosed presumably due to how hard he took his brother's death. There are some other twists in the case such as how the investigation was allegedly bungled.

I was pretty appalled at this woman's behaviour when I read this in the paper this morning. TB/OT has been slow, so I figured I would share. Who knows, maybe somebody thinks the woman is in the right aside from this woman and her lawyer.

We can be ugly. I am riding on the subway yesterday when this old woman totters into a crowded car. There are seats on the subway clearly marked for seniors and pregnant women. The signs are regularly ignored. I wanted to give her my seat but I knew she wouldn't be able to push through the crowd to reach it. Meanwhile young healthy people are sitting in the senior seat watching her almost topple over as the train rushes through the tunnel. A young woman standing there shouts "Does somebody want to give this lady your seat" She is met with blank stares. We are in the first car and the driver walks in and starts talking. Before he could finish his sentence someone stood and gave her his seat. The people sitting in the senior seats still sat and stared. Is it just me that thinks we can be selfish a****les.

The gall of some people. We live in such a sue-happy society. The lack of remorse on the part of the guilty amazes me.

I kinda hope it does and that the judge makes her pay all legal fees for all sides, all court costs, and anything else he or she can think of to make this woman pay.

The family of the two boys should counter-sue for the loss of the one and the OD of the second. The OD probably wasn't random and it may not have happened if not for losing his brother.

Kindness is becoming more unfashionable than ever, and it's sad. I'm probably wrong, but I sometimes wonder if the constant push for being strong as an individual has something to do with it. The "every man for himself" thinking has to stop.

Apparently some media are failing to mention that the parents of the dead cyclist sued the woman driver first. That would naturally result in her attorney filing a counter suit.

This may just be a smart legal tactic, in response to a $900,000 lawsuit filed by the victim's parents, who claim that Simon was "speeding, under the influence or texting at the time of the accident, and that Jules Simon allowed her to drive the SUV when “he knew or ought to have known” she was in no condition to do so."

She was cleared of any blame by law enforcement but got sued anyway.

Sometimes accidents happen.

Well my point is everyone is trashing the driver for suing while neglecting to mention she got sued first. Not that she is blameless. However it was 1:30 AM and the kids were riding 3 abreast and she didn't see them. Yes let's go to court and figure out precisely what percentage of blame goes to her, and to the kids.

Also it's possible her counter suit was filed by her insurance company because that's what insurance companies and lawyers do when a lawsuit has been filed.

I spent a summer in the Republic of Georgia back when it was still part of the USSR. One thing I was really impressed by there was that, when an elderly person boarded a bus, the young men jumped out of their seats to let them sit. It was like they were competing for the honor.
