let me explain myself: I can tell you that I love fenders, but mine no more... you can understand that the problems I get have turned me mad. I actually test a few basses, and stopped on a fender precision deluxe (in toulouse, 100 miles)but bying it (expensive...), with the disappointment I get with the jazz fears myself. sure, I can tell you that the bass feels a lot different than mine, it seems stronger built.

when I bought that one (I worked all a summer for it...) 4 basses where on sale; with a friend we looked to the grain of wood, let down the ones with over 2 pieces wood in the body, weight, tested them unplugged and with a flat sound on the same amp.

sure I can do it better, can tell me what to look at on the new one?

you're right when you tell me that they weren't perfectly setup, I remember that the luthier worked on the neck pocket... and yes, I made the mistake to believe that a japan jazz could be at less equal to a mia.

if I understand: I must look for a bass-adviser to come with me in the shops? or ask my guitarist to pick one bass in us at a very different price, near 35% less (but I couldn't try it..., he will do it for me. I know that it's an horror, but are the mia deluxe series blind buys? that is to say you can buy one without testing, trust that the basses passed all tests in the factory? more: it is the way it goes in little shops in france; like mine: deluxe series are only aviable on catalog...or take the car to visit bigger shops 100 miles away, hopping they have one in test)

I've only been playing for a little over a year. I have a MIA Fender P that I bought used at GC. While I like it, I shudder to think what a more experienced player would say if they tried it.

I bought it because I wanted that Motown vibe and thought the low end was so much better than my first bass, the Ibanez SR300. It stays in tune and sounds great....but then I haven't tried 20 Fenders and MM, Carvin or Sadowsky (boy do those look great).

A TB member told me that there will be a jam session coming up and then I can find out how well my bass is made....or not. The main thing is I like it and play it. :bassist:

hello! that's exactly what I'm doing now (thanks to the TB forums and of course, the TB forumers!), after beeing mad about it.

I found a luthier able to replace my neck with an allparts one, or order a warmoth one and bring him with the bass.

allparts: as I understood are "hit or miss" parts, less quality than warmoth (I said as I understood), but I can ask him to choose one for me, he's got P and J replacement necks in his shop.
warmoth: the best neck replacement, but I'm still a little bit scared to order, asking myself if the neck will be delivered in a good condition... do they bring well protected necks?

my jazz is a 3 bolt neck ('75 reissue), I think the luthier will convert it to a 4 bolt neck, this will be done in the summer, I'm exited about it !!!

yes, of course, I heard about vigier, for me the excess was one of the best bass I ever played! but $$$ (about 2000 euros) for me at the moment, saddly.

another great bass luthier near from my home is noguera(Link Removed), with the "expression" line for exemple, cheaper than vigier but still on top. one day I will drive there to get one!!!

I'm happy to hear that. I think you'll be very pleased with the Warmoth neck. Everything they've shipped to me was very well packaged and arrived in great condition.
I have'nt dealt with Allparts on a neck or a body, but I've bought a bridge and some other assorted parts from them. They were nice people to do business with.
I'd suggest after you've done a 'search' for Allparts' necks on this forum, post a new thread asking how's the quality of their necks, or how they compare to Warmoth.
It may not be necessary to spend the money on changing your bass from a 3 bolt to a 4, but that's up to you.
Whichever brand of neck you purchase, I wish you success.

I agree with what Treena said above.
I would look for good older fender.
The QC is just better with older fenders.
1978 and back.
If you can't get a older fender.
Try lakland's Osborn or Glaub basses.
The Skylines are better than anything fender makes now.
And the USA Laklands are almost as good a vintage fenders.
