A Tale of 2 cities...another GC complaint thread! Warning .....long post

I've never had something like that happen, though it's honestly surprising that it hasn't, given how many used items I have shipped to my store of choice. Outside of the sometimes... optimistic descriptors of used items on their website, I've had mostly positive experiences while shopping there. And yeah, I'm the guy that everyone knows my name and I get the "you sure you don't work here?" jokes for the 100th time :)

But as great as my experiences have been, having a colossal mistake would hurt the relationship, as I would expect with any store or person I interact with.

What would you do if a GC store made a mistake? You quoted if someone made a colossal mistake it would effect your relationship. Please explain what you mean. I can't imagine having several positive experiences with a store then someone makes a mistake as all humans do, and it greatly affects your relationship.

Key word there is "hurt", not "destroy". For instance, I also frequent another mom and pop shop that has a great tech, but after a few bad experiences with the owner, I only use their tech services and never buy any high dollar items from them. Things might change if the owner's attitude changes.

Yes, I know the money still makes its way to the owner, but I like the tech, so I'm not going to sever the entire relationship.

.....he offered to refund the shipping costs (which I won't really know is actually applied until my next credit card bill)....I told him I wanted more than that...
This is why I never worked more than one job in retail.
:poop: happens. frustrating, but not the end of the world. OP: good luck getting it sorted out!

....but you've got an instrument to play on sunday, right? :)
Yea, how many Sundays have you played without it? Well, add one more and be grateful that in the grand scheme of things, you seem to have a lot of good things in your life. A year from now (or much less, I bet) this won't make an iota of difference. Disappointing? Indeed, but it's just a material object.

My thought is that if GC refunds the expedited shipping cost and OP gets the bass within a week, not the end of the world, and lesson learned about relying on overnight shipping vis a vis a gig.
BINGO

I know this wasn't directed at the OP, but I'm curious if @basspraiser has had a few GC transactions that went just fine?

Hey Doug, check and see if the weight connected to that tracking # is consistent with what you purchased. #1 scenario is wrong tracking number entered online. #2 is someone mistakenly put the wrong tag on the box. In case #2 you'd be receiving the other persons order. Either of those and you'll get your bass- they aren't going to give someone a $2k bass for free. I'm going with the most likely, #1. It was "Mike" at GC that solved my tracking issue if that helps. I bet you have it by Tuesday.

Yesterday, I was advised by a great TBer @Fred312b

That this bass:

For Sale - Jerry Scheff Lakeland 5 string american made

Came up for a GREAT price used at GC. He knew I liked it but I thought the original price was too high, as was the original GC price...yes the bass had transferred between GC stores for an unknown reason....

After @Fred312b posted, I talked to my better half and asked if I could take the plunge IF I sold my Skyline Scheff 5er...she said yes..as long as I posted he Skyline as soon as I checked out the US Scheff...

I jumped at the chance.

I WAS hoping to be able to play this particular bass this weekend at church...NOT going to happen.

I even paid extra for overnight delivery.

It was supposed to be delivered as stated on the web site "Afternoon after order"....

Well...at 4 PM today I checked the tracking number....WHAT DID IT SAY?????

"The receiver agreed to pickup the package at the UPS location"...I never did SO....I clicked on further...the bass was in VAN NUYS CA!!!!

I Immediately called GC CS to see what they could find out..."Mike" answered the phone...overall nice guy, and asked what he could do for me....I told him the situation and he said "That's Not right....let me check into it"....He also commented that the notes appear to imply that I had it delivered to a GC Store in CA.

He came back and said "UPS called you and you said you would pick it up" ..I said "Why would I do that - it was supposed to be delivered to my house and I live in Illinois and NOT CA!"...He was flabbergasted.....He had no idea what to do.

He said..."The tracking numbers probably got mixed up....you'll get your bass tonight"....I was not as sure as he was....I asked him to check into it.

He said he had to call the store that sold it for more info....after about 15 minutes on hold (with horrific music) he told me no CS managers were not on site at the store and thus, nothing could happen until Monday.

I told him I wanted the bass to play in church on Sunday...and that is why I ordered it overnight shipping.....he offered to refund the shipping costs (which I won't really know is actually applied until my next credit card bill)....I told him I wanted more than that...and he said..."That's up to store management...which will have to wait until Monday".

I told him that would be OK but what should I do to assure I got my bass? He assured me he'll get it figured out Monday IF...IF he works on Monday...(what kind of organization is GC if you work on Friday and don't know if you work on Monday???)

I told him that if someone was expecting a package....he/she would pick it up from UPS, take it home....open it....maybe carefully (able to repack)...and maybe NOT (unable to repack)...and THEN figure out he/she got the wrong package. They would then call UPS and who knows how long it would take them to get it back to UPS for shipping...

Who knows how long that would take??

Over the course of our conversation, he gave me 3 manager's names to speak to on Monday.....I tried to tell him "It's GC's fault..have the manager call me"...he said "Sorry -we don't do that" (and they wonder WHY they have poor CS ratings and may be going bankrupt!!).

He assured me that a particular manager (2 of the three were...as it turns out...NOT working on Monday) would follow up with the store on Monday and I would get me my bass by Tuesday...I asked "how?" he said [insert manager's name here] would follow up...I asked who had the bass...he was not sure...so I asked "If you do not know where the bass is....at UPS or someone's house..HOW can you assure me I'll have it by Tuesday?" He fumbled quite a bit and said "We'll do our best"

Another thing that is frustrating is that they (CS) are in Utah (an hour behind me and 2 hours behind the store that sold me the bass)

I told him that after Thursday I leave for a week's long conference and want the bass before I leave so I can check it out...he said "You WILL have it Tuesday or Wednesday".....I again asked HOW can you assure me?" He again fumbled quite a bit and said "We'll do our best"

He even went as far as to blame UPS again for putting the wrong tracking number on the wrong package....and that I may even receive the bass tonight...well it's 10:00 and NO delivery yet.

The ironic thing is that the bass was in Rockford (at the airport and less than 50 miles from me) at 10 PM last night...(before flying to CA)...I could'a picked it up there!

How...just HOW does a simple on-line order get so screwed up?????

I did not get a package so it was not like 2 packages got the shipping labels swapped....so huh????

Where is the Van Nuy's person's package???

I hope he does not keep the bass and that I eventually get it...

I really never shop GC...this is a reason to keep NOT doing so....

PS - "Mike" was a very very nice person and was doing everything he could in a bad situation....I do not blame him in any event....he was great to deal with...but I am very sorry he works for such a bad company.

This definitely sucks. One more reason to always have gear sent directly to your local store, never to your home. Frankly, don’t trust UPS either.

I did... The weight was about right...

I never did receive the other person's order.

I hope to be able to report some good news tomorrow!

But I believe UPS delivers it either way, so.....

Apparently, I've either been incredibly lucky, or this is an anomaly. Yes, bad things happen, with both UPS and FedEx (and any other shipper), and yes, GC employs normal, everyday people who aren't knowledgeable about what they're selling. Personally, I've spent several thousands of dollars with GC over the past year or two, with no issues whatsoever. Biggest complaint I've had is when a store doesn't ship same day, even if I placed the order in the morning... but that's only a minor inconvenience.

I'm sorry, OP, that this happened, but I have no reason to think it won't work out in the end. Good luck!

I guess I'm learning my lesson.

This is the first time I've actually ordered an instrument on line from GC....

I realize hindsight s always 20-20, but I’ve landed some incredible deals at GC. Anyway, I hope all works out in the end. Who knows, when it arrives, I’d go to the local store explain the situation, ask for some sort of remediation in the way of store credit, and see what happens.

Good post and pretty much is my experience at GC, except I always have it delivered to my local store. As for shippers, well, let’s just say I don’t expect deliveries to always arrive on time, but have found they do eventually arrive.

Anxiously waiting to see the outcome. Hopefully pics soon!

Thx

Hope to be able to post pics before I leave for a week of conferences and meetings Thursday!

Played my skyline scheff today.... An EXCELLENT BASS! really no complaints.... And it was recorded on several 50 cent tracks....( Not a fan... But that's ok)... Not as prestigious as actually being owned by Jerry Scheff... But it's it's still something...

The scheff I currently own has been heard millions of times... The Scheff I'm buying?

Not so.... But it's still a cool bass...

I'll put more when I know me tomorrow...

Argh.. But a client scheduled a conference call at the same time I'm supposed to follow up with GC.... OH WELL... Clients come first!

The saga continues...

The person I was supposed to talk to at GC CS was not in today (contrary to what I was told on Friday) so I went on line to re-track the store it came from.

They were pretty helpful overall....they got hold of UPS, had the package re -labeled with the correct address and I am supposed to have it tomorrow. I guess I will see.

In the conversation I was told that the bass was "returned" to the store....that concerns me a bit. I guess I will see when I get it. I confirmed the 45 day return guarantee just in case....

Hope to have a further update tomorrow.

I have purchased three used basses from GC's website...however I always have them shipped to the closest store...it's faster, cheaper, and if it's complete crap... I can just return it on the spot. No issues thus far...OP I Hope it arrives as expected on Tuesday...and there are no further issues...
