Ableton/feedback problem

Hi guys was jut looking for some info on a problem I'm having. I recently decided to do some recording on the PC, nothing major just for leisure. I started off by plugging my active bass into the mic port which is on board audio. This was live through ableton so quickly discovered I'd be needing an audio interface as the latency was pretty bad.

I'm waiting on the interface arriving in the mail, however last night I wanted to get a little lick down which I didn't want to forget (and didn't want to pull the multitrack out). Whenever I'm hitting the record button in ableton to record "audio" I'm getting this crazy hissing sound which quickly gets louder to the point my speakers sound like they're about to explode, with the track volume clipping horribly.

I realised this happens even without the instrument plugged in. At first I thought it was something wrong with ableton and maybe required a fresh install. However I opened up guitar rig and it's doing the same thing.

It's like a horrible feedback/crunchy hiss like sound. I was wondering have I maybe overloaded that mic input with the active bass? If so will I just disable audio in bios and use the usb audio interface for everything?

I tried uninstalling the audio drivers and reinstalling but it didn't seem to work. Everything else sound related is fine but when I press record audio in ableton or enter guitar rig It's giving me this horrible feedback. This is what it sounds like;

Make sure you have your line in jack selected as your recording source in both windows and ableton.
