Absolutely bonkers idea!

Will it work?

Would it work? Probably.

A magnetic pickup is legitimately just wire wrapped around a magnet. The devil is in the details in terms of getting it to work well. If I recall you'd want more or less 42 AWG lacquer-insulated wire to get a good impedance within a number of winds, and whether or not the size/grade of neodymium magnet you're using would be ideal is another thing off the top of my head. That says nothing about the potential impact of the number of windings and potentially even patterns.

Don't let me saying this STOP you, just be aware that if you want it to work well on purpose (beyond happy accident) you'd do well to do some homework.

Many thanks! I'll take these factors into research!

A standing bass pickup made from a large neo puck and four big steel bolts, winding is in debate in my head for this but could it even work?!? I will eventually try this if it seems plausible enough! If anyone understands autistic craziness then the "diagram" might help. Thanks for all the feed back!

And this plugs in through the back of the body? Just a question. What problem are we trying to solve?

You need 3 things.
1. String that can be magnetized.
2. A magnet to magnetize the string
3. A coil close enough to the string to pick up up the varying magnetic field caused by the string movement

Only our imaginations limit the mechanical configuration.

You can wonder, and TB can speculate and debate over it it endlessly. But the only way to actually know for sure is to build a prototype and see for yourself.

I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t. A magnetic pickup isn’t rocket science. Many good ones are extremely simple devices despite all the marketing hype that usually accompanies them.

I'll say it should work.

Atlansia in Japan have been building something similar with 2 poles for many years.

Well thank you oh so much for dropping me down that rabbit hole...

Copied from Gollihur:

Strings reported to be GOOD for magnetic pickup use:

Eurosonics
Pirastro Original Flexocore
Thomastik Spirocores, Superflexible
Corelli 370 (I can vouch for these)
Innovation Polychrome (work but with lowered output)
D'Addario Zyex (work but with lowered output)
Jargar dolce
D'Addario Helicore-- (Note: though I have my concerns with the E string; seems as if its response is somewhat lower than the other strings, at least the Orchestra and Hybrids I tried seemed that way.)

Strings reported to be NOT GOOD for magnetic pickup use:

Pirastro Obligatos and Evah Pirazzi (minimal metallic content)
LaBella Supernils (no metallic content)
All Innovation Strings (no metallic content)
Gut strings (insufficent or no metallic content)
