Absolutely no smoking during the work day

Wow, I've seen lots of irresponsible smoking, but never seen anyone light a garbage receptacle on fire...

What a weird and nearly unenforcable policy.

As a nearly lifelong smoker and hater of cigarette smoke (yes I'm conflicted), the only reasoning for this must be to keep those around you from noticing and being offended by your stench.

How soon before they dictate that you can't smoke between the time you wake and your arrival at work? Do they dictate what you eat or what brand of soda you're allowed to consume?

I am a non-smoker and am quite sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke. Working closely with people who smell like cigarette smoke is a problem for me.

However, not everyone who smokes smells like cigarette smoke. I worked with one guy for three years before I knew he was out puffing away on break. How he managed to be smell-neutral I don't know.

Maybe your employer has had complaints of smoky people, and figures the only way to solve the problem is to prohibit smoking. After all, it's much easier to say "you can't do this" rather than "you can do this but only if nobody can tell that you did."

This will sound very odd, but I stopped smoking at work voluntarily. My first cigarette of the day is smoked when I get home and open a beer. I just got sick of it. It's too hot to smoke, it makes me more - rather than less edgy when I'm working, I can't stand the aftertaste in the back of my mouth all day....

But when I drink, man do I want a cigarette!

It is the default law of the land in the healthcare industry, of course. Not even in the park garages is it allowed.

Hate to break it to you but CNN had an employee non smoking policy from the day they opened their doors. They were in fact the first (by policy) non smoking company in America. Employees were not allowed to smoke, period. A few smokers lied to get a job there following the logic they could not be compelled to follow work policy off the clock, but when they got caught they were promptly fired. They sued and CNN's defense was if they were paying for all or part of an employees health insurance they could deny a job to someone with a higher than usual risk of driving up their premiums, and the court agreed with them.

Granted, it's not the same as saying you can smoke just not during work hours but it's close enough, and given the current opinion regards smoking in general, I doubt any court would have much sympathy for a smoker under any circumstances.

I think that's an entirely different angle. But again I'm very weary of these kind of policies. It's logical to not hire people that are short, or have under developed frames, as they are more likely to suffer from health problems. It's a major societal problem if your unable to connect the logic.

I use to work at a place that attempted to restrict smoking on and off the clock but strictly in the rules of uniform, not necessarily in general. As long as your polo was on, no cigarettes, no drinking, no problem(s) (if only that was the real case, ha!)

I've see/heard of many places trying to pass the policies as a means of efficiency (4 smoke breaks X 7 minutes...you see where this is going) more so than health premium run downs--as mentioned, if that was the case then obesity policies won't be far behind. :hmm:

Yes. I quit cold turkey 1.5 years ago. BUT I will say the present urges will never be as bad as present ones and future ones follow suit. My method of madness is sunflower seeds, lollipops and the occasion pick.

I visit a lot of different companies.

It is becoming more widespread each and every day.

What I'm seeing locally is NO tobacco use of any kind while at work or on/in their property.

If you do smoke your health insurance costs more . One place has about a $75 a month surcharge for tobacco users. This is what's going to happen with obesity,high blood pressure ,high cholesterol etc... Surcharges because your current health falls into a high risk category.

I smoked for years and hated it the last ten . I wish they would pull them off the market . or at least no make them so prevalent.
