Abused my 110...

My son has the car so I had to mooch a ride from our drummer to practice.

There was not much room left in the car so I brought only one 110.

Well after 3 hours I suddenly noticed crackle/distortion on the attack of my notes. I backed off on the master right away and finished the song. Pretty much called it anight right there and then (well actually I plugged into an old Peavey warhorse to finish off the night).

Normally I use two 110's stacked, I think I overdid it (we play on the loud side).

Makbass club 450: EQ close to flat, gain at 5 master at 5. Cab is one of my Simplexx with Basslite 2010. I dig in a lot with a redultant hard attack on the cab.

Sooo my question is...is there a test (other than feel for voice coil rub or just plain retrying the cab) to know if I toasted the speaker?

Thats what I thought. Couldnt smell anything off last night so Im hopeful. Ill have to sniff a little closer and make sure my wife doesnt catch me!

Sorry Rob but you’ve just found out what too little speaker for the job does. You’ll need to contact MarkBass for a replacement driver.

I’m surprised that you gig in a loud band with just 2x10s. I wouldn’t even try without two of my 2x10 Acmes.

Wake up call you are right. I was concerned enough about using two 110`s but I know I overdid it with the single 110. Good news is it seemed have survived because I shut her down pretty much right away.

BTW: Its a homemade Bill Fitzmaurice Simplexx with an Eminence Basslite s2010. Im really happy with it (them). I was cutting wood for a 210 just this morning. My plan all along was to stack them together as a 410 (wired series/parallel) so that project got bumped forward. See picture attached (they are down in front).

Sorry for your loss. But at least you were able to recover the body....at my band's rehearsal, a 10" would've been reduced to black confetti.

Its really nice, very deep but still fine for mid and high`s (no tweeter). As you can see if you look close in the photo I putz around with some other drivers that I got my hands (bottom one has a different driver) on but the Basslite is the best so far. Im no expert but I like it.

I pushed it beyond what I should have expected of it last Friday (see above). Mind you it was very hot in the room and it was keeping up for 3 hours before it ran into trouble.

The single cab (with S2010) is just 25lbs!

Im trying to finish off a DR250 but that has been close to completion for like a year now....

BFM’s designs are good and efficient but still can be damaged when Xmax is exceeded. I hope that you are lucky and no permanent damage was done.

Also, if it sounds fine and there isn't any coil rub if you press on it lightly, and the cone isn't creased or ripped anywhere, the driver is fine.

And thanks for the heads up on the simplexx, I might look into the plans then, see if I could get a rehearsal cab going on.

Update.
I have use my "abused" 110 a few times since my last post, twice on its own (treated with a little more respect of course), and all is well.
Tough little driver.

It was mentioned that I was expecting waay too much using a single 110 in a band practice setting (and I dont dispute that) but it took several hours on a hot humid evening before it complained. Until then it was holding its own. It wasnt 410 sound (and I wasnt expecting such) but.... a 110 vs drummer!
