AC Adapters for pedals

Milliamps is the key. You can use pretty much any wall wart (for the voltage of your continent 120 vs 240) as long as the milliamps are equal or larger than the recommended amount. If your effect wants 400 milliamps, then fine, use a 400, or a 1000, and you are good to go. Just do not go BELOW the 400. I gave up batteries years and years ago and have a zillion wall warts collected. Obviously, the adapter needs to fit into the effect box properly.
 
AC adapters do not equal noise unless you are in a super-discriminating listening environment (like a recording studio), or unless the pedal or AC adapter were badly designed, which does happen sometimes.

You need to know (a) the plug size, (b) the polarity, (c) AC or DC, (d) voltage, (e) milliamps. As MEKer said, the mA number can be any amount higher than the amount the pedal draws. You want a regulated supply, always look to see if it says it is regulated. A large percentage of pedals are designed to run on the Boss PSA standard supply, so see if the specs for any given pedal match the specs for the Boss before you go hunting for some obscure supply.
