Double Bass Accurate Bass Cab Without Hype

Sounds like you might be very happy with either Phil Jones' cabs (be sure to pick the appropriate impedance, as some of them have 'unusual' impedances), or with two EA Wizzy cabs, either the Wizzy 10 or the M-line Wizzy (which uses a 12" driver). The 'regular' Wizzy (also a 12" driver) is also great. They can all be had in either 4 or 8-ohm configuration, so if you want to use two, be sure to get the 8-ohm option.

I need to just try this bass with some different cabinets and see how it sounds. I low the bergs so much, but I just don't know if they are the problem or not. I get a great tone with the bass and the evahs, but it's a little bit dark and gutty, so there isn't much punch or attack. Do you guys think spiros would really help that out ?

Try the Thomastic Belcanto strings. Since I got these there's lots of punch and clarity. Both for pizz as well as arco.
Could be that you don't need other cabs with these..... And when you have put them on, give them a month or so, then they'll sound good.

Just going back to the OP again, how do the Berg 10's sound w/ slab? Are the mids and highs present enough?

And are you saying the unamped sound w/ the Evahs is dark and gutty? They didn't have enough growl for my tastes the one time I played a bass strung w/ them, but that wasn't on my bass, it was in a luthier's showroom. I'm generalizng but I think yeah the Spiros will have more punch and attack.

the bergs sound perfect with the slab. Full. capable of all sorts of sounds.
the upright is so dark right now with not uch attack unless i pull if out in my right hand.. which is bad for your hands and shouldnt have to hapen

You really need to hear the Acme cabs. I plugged my upright into a GB Shuttle and my Acme B-2 and it sounds wonderful. I would think that a B-1 would be great for upright. I believe it's 31 lbs though.

OK so it's not the cabs that are lacking mids and highs, right? I'd be tempted to conclude then that the cabs are fine, and the problem lies elsewhere. How did the high pass filter experiment go?

Not sure about those remarks re: RH technique and attack. I don't want the amp to manufacture a more forceful attack if it's not happening unamped. I don't expect it to either. But everybody's tastes and needs are different. If the unamped sound is too dark, maybe consult w/ your teacher and/or luthier, maybe try some different strings.
