Acoustic Bass Problem

What should I get after I return my deffective ABG

  • Just replace it with the same Ibanez ABG. Yours was probably a lemon.

So, after much inquiry and a hefty thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/accoustic-bass-guitar-questions-847971/
I decided upon buying this ABG

I get the bass, and I'm less than pleased. Why?
The bass a handful of finish blems.

The tuners look like a drunk person installed them.

The wax used to polish the bass is left for me to clean, and the adjust decal is falling off.

All of this is stuff I can look past, being that it's a $350 instrument. You pay for what you get.

In it's defense, it plays decently, and is pretty much loud enough to somewhat hang with two acoustic guitars.

This is why I'm not happy. The bass has an onboard tuner, that when activated, your signal to the amp is cut.
For some reason, the onboard tuner activates at random, causing my signal to vanish, mid-song.

I have return policy, so I obviously plan to use it.

My question to Talkbass... I need to replace it with a new acoustic that has to be black. I don't play acoustic a lot, so I'm not super enthusiastic about spending over $500 on an ABG.

Should I?
1. Just get another Ibanez, and hope that the original purchase was a lemon?
2. Purchase a nice Boulder Creek Bass on Ebay from a store 20 mins from my house that is $650?
3. Forget both of those and get the _________?

I don't like the Applause/Ovation.

Yours is very similar to the one that I returned. It's not the same one, as mine had a dark violin burst finish. I don't think yours was used or returned. My opinion of the Ibanez AEB10 is that they're poorly assembled and there's zero QC at the factory. They're slapping them together and tossing them into a box. The two Dean EABCs that I had were assembled much better.

My Ibanez didn't really have a finish blemishes, but it did have the drunk tuners. The fret ends on mine were awful. There was a defect in the wood in the top that should have caused that piece to be rejected. Even the label inside the sound hole was very crooked.

The Dean + Fishman Platinum Pro preamp = less than $400 and the Fishman is head and shoulders above ANYBODY's onboard preamp. The Deans I've played at stores lately have been well built and sound good unplugged.

For the money you would spend on the Boulder Creek, you can get a Breedlove Atlas. (on sale).

I too noticed that my 'A" tuner was a little 'off-plumb' when I got it home. I then went and looked at all the other Ibanez AEBs and they had the same slight misalignment to that one tuner. So - what's up with that? I dunnow, but it's not a deal breaker to me.

Maybe it's to keep dead notes to a minimum - huh? Your "D" tuner however, is not correct.

Sure looks like you got sold a B-Stock unit to me too. I hate scratches, bumps, chips and other damage.

Chips and scratches don't bother me. My signal cutting out randomly is the deal breaker.

When I was shopping for EAB's, I ordered a Dean Playmate - then took it to a couple of stores to A/B it with everything available, during the return period... The Dean compared quite favorably to everything I checked out, including the Ibanez's - and only cost me $150...

+1 for godin... great basses, I would like to get a Godin abg fretless someday, but I don't know how much $$$ they sell in your area...
we can get them a bit cheaper here in canada since they are made here (one of the rare items that sells less than on the other side of the border, in USA... lol )

i haven't had very good luck with ibanez lately. id send it back. when i got by btb 6 string the tuners were also screwed on crooked, and so was each component of the bridge... its very disappointing.

Oh - fer sure I'd LOVE a Godin - just out of my price range.

Besides, I KNOW using an amp is a necessity for any ABG. Thinking otherwise is fruitless. OK for just plunkin' and thumpin' all alone - but in a group: use an amp.

I have a barbershop jam this morning so I'm taking my Ibanez - but I WILL be using a small Peavey amp even though it's a very small room with acoustic guitars a banjo and fiddle.

It could just be the picture, but there looks to be uneven coloration on the back of the headstock right where Ibanez stamps their B stock instruments. Id contact them and run the serial number, if someones passing B stock items as new...... I had an AEBDVS10 and it didnt have any issues aside from being quieter than acoustic guitars when unpluged.

I was originally going to buy the Dean AEB, but so many folks told me that the horrid electronics and lack of consistency in manufacturing made these instruments pale in comparison to the Ibby. Now I don't know what to think.
