Double Bass Acoustic Image amp

Yeah, you're right that it improves the sound; but I have both Sadowsky preamp and Sans Amp and I still don't really care that much for the elec sound of the AI. Besides, the poster is a Stick player and by using the Iamp, all the EQ you need is there and if you use the Clarus you have to invest in an outboard pre to carry around. Small matter, I know, apples and oranges I suppose, but I just haven't been knocked out by the AI/elec/pre combination.

surprised no one mentioned Acme cabs!

Tom prolly knows of my fixation and love for 'em! sup, bro!

as many in the "other" amp lounge know, Acme's are known for hitting the 31 hz Low B fundamental with ease. they're also known for the relatively uncolored sound. i've owned EA, and have heard many an Acoustic Image Contra, but they're not quite as "flat" as the Acme's.

truth be told, the cabs' efficiencies arent that high, measuring in at 90 dB. so they're not gonna help with those "louder than an airport runway" heavy metal shows, but on the other hand, would be perfectly suitable for your gig.

i use a pair of B-1 1x10's and they sound superb with my Alessandro head for my Eminence 5 string. for yourself a 50 lbs. 2x10 might be more suitable.

again, do a search for Acme cabs in the electric bassist lounge, and you'll get lots of info.

anton,

yup, Alessandro's mainly known for their amazing Trainwreck inspired guitar amps. i actually own two!

i also own his 60 watt all tube Basset Hound. uses a unique octal 6SL7 preamp tube for a more hifi sweeter sound, as well as a 6550 power tube section for a thick punchie sound. Bass Player magazine did a review of it a few years ago, and couldnt stop raving about it. funny, but they're actually quite affordable, and not nearly as expensive as the review says they are.

btw, George is actually a good friend, and he's since been trying to expand his amplifier line more into the bass world. i'm currently helping him test his new bass preamp and all tube DI that he's been working on. in a few weeks once the initial prototype is done, i'll be putting up a review in the "electric bass" lounge. i'll be sure to put up the review here, too.

Joker:

I don't recall seeing the picture of the Basset Hound with the Epi cabs. Nice! That'd be tone heaven, I am sure.

And yes, one of these days, I really do have to check out some ACME's...

Thanks for joining the discussions over here!

Tom.

How does 50 watts match those two cabs?

anton,

thx, it sounds great!

i usually do use the Acme's cause they do sound more "true" than the Epifani's. but the Epi's sound equally incredible. maybe just a tad more electric bass friendly with its punchier lower mids and upper mid cut.

either one is great. the Epifani 1x10's are just much lighter to carry around, but they dont have nearly the low end the Acme's are capable.

snogdog,

are you referring to an electric bass setup? maybe you should post up your question in the other amp lounge. but the GK stuff is great.

I don't know how much volume you need, but I doubt that any tiny little combo will sound as "large" as the setup you mentioned because you simply won't be moving as much air with a single speaker. How much stuff are you willing to carry to get the sound you want?

Chris, I would like to stay @ 80 lbs. I think that is the weight of just the D 180 head. I have considered just strapping the whole damn thing to a refigerator dolly. That may be my best bet. I don't want to buy a smaller rig and not be able to reproduce a good acoustic response. Thanks for your input. Later Gator

Of course money is always an issue, but you can't go wrong with an Acoustic Image Clarus and a hi-end 1x12 cab like an EA or Bergantino. The clarus weighs about 5 lbs, and I'd guess a Bergantino HT112 might weigh in at about 35 lbs or so. I use that rig as my standard studio/session rig, and it does great, even coming in at about half of your weight limit If you need to move more air, add another 12" cab, and you're all set. None of this stuff is cheap, though.

Testing....testing.....

AHA! It actually works!

(ahem)

MAHLERMUTT,

This is the little rig I was telling you about. Light, versatile, punchy, and did I mention "light"? I'll leave the descriptives up to THEPOMPETUSOFJKNY, but it sounds like just what the doctor ordered. It also doubles really well.
