So, I’ve got a collection of basses growing right? Out of the blue one day my dad says before my grandpa died he left me a really old bass. I’m interested (even if it can’t play.) so I pick it off of him and find a monstrosity. When I was 5 I painted ALL OVER IT in CHEAP ACRYLIC PAINT. I hook it up, and the sound is beautiful. My heart is set on saving it, for the sound, and for my grandad, but I don’t want to ruin it. Help! (I’ll update with the model later.)

You mean you want to protect your kindergarten paint job? Clear-coating it would be the best route but I'd make sure whatever you use is compatible with the paints that are on it first. I'd probably have it done professionally if it means that much to you.
Sorry, I should have made it more clear. I can’t get my painting off. All of the basses That've come in my possession were nothing I couldn’t fix, but trust me, this is sad.
It's possible to do it, but you really have to be careful not to eat through the original paint job. I would tread very lightly with it. You might want to pick up one of those liquid scratch remover kits with the scratch remover and buffing polish, and see if lightly hand-buffing it with the scratch remover and pad will take off the acrylic paint, then polish it up. I don't know if it'll work for sure, but that's about the only way I can think of to remove the acrylic without ruining the original finish. I'm sure others will have some ideas, but to me, this seems like the least invasive way.

Some instruments tell a story. This one... it's a story and a half. The fact that the bass that you 'ruined' as a youngster is now in your hands is karma and it's cool. This is ultimate payback from your granddad and I'm thinking maybe you're now required to keep the artwork and play that bass out every chance you get.

If I were in your position, I'd leave it as-is. And I say that before seeing your pictures. I'd definitely be terrified of ruining something so sentimental.

Pictures are needed, but acrylic paint should come off fairly easy depending on the under lying finish. A poly finish should be more forgiving than a lacquer finish. Post pics and the specific make and model.

I have to tell you, Gabby, I agree with them.
sub'd just to see the "monstrosity". Im sure it cant be as bad as the sharpie bass that we saw a couple of months back.
