Cort Artisan series. Think their C series has actives too. But you should be able to get the A series stuff for well under a grand, most of it.

That is a very good recommendation. My Cort A4 Plus FMMH is an outstanding bass with excellent hardware. Although the OP went with a G&L Tribute JB-2. It's hard to go wrong with G&L IMHO.
