Adding Chorus and Flanger

For a while now, I have been working with a small pedal board with no more than 4 effects at a time. One tuner, and various kinds of dirt. Recent changes, orders and acquisitions have forced me back to using my older, larger home made pedal board that was a copy of the Pedaltrain 2. That also gives me more space and allows me to expand my board to include other effects. What I'm looking at right now is adding a Chorus and a Flanger, as separate effects.

I've had a couple different choruses, having the H20 until recent, and also using a Boss, CEB-3 I think it was. I think what I need are cost effective pedals, ones that are still very good while being on the lower end of the cost spectrum as they won't be my go to's but will be there to add something when needed.

I'm tempted to go with TC Electronics Corona Chorus and Vortex Flange. The Mini's are like $100 and the larger pedals aren't much more than that. Let's say we cap spending at $150 per pedal, whats the best bang for your buck Chorus and Flange for Bass?

I'm also shopping for a chorus pedal. From what I have heard, I like the Boss ceb-3, though I haven't had a chance to try it. I'm also looking at the Source audio Gemini chorus, as I already have a couple of their other pedals and the midi stuff on my board.

So FYI this thread is now a moot point for me personally. But continue to discuss if you please. @clarke46 , Just as an FYI, I picked up the Boss Stereo Chorus Ensemble. I heard some demo's on it and I really like it compared to the Super Chorus. I had the CEB-3, and I did like it.

I also went Boss and picked up the BF-3 Boss Flanger, and went off board and did the MXR Envelope Filter. So looking to add some wacky sounds to my arsenal.

Source Audio Mercury is really darned good. First unit I have been able to live with since my old 70's ADA Jet Flange. It runs the presets from the Gemini Chorus pedal as well. Phaser, passable Vibe, Flange and Chorus... 1 pedal...

I get pretty solid results from these two. And they are both on a less expensive side of the spectrum

I own both the corona chorus and the vortex flanger and they sound phenomenal for the price. they even sound great with overdrive and distortion pedals. I would recommend them both. I also would recommend the source audio gemini chorus and mercury flanger.

I had the Corona chorus and never really liked it. I switched to the Mooer Ensemble Queen, which is great. But I wan't conviced either. I have an Ampeg liquifier now and I'm very happy with it. Cheap and awesome sounding.

For Flanger, I bought really cheap the TC Thunderstorm and I think it sounds great. I also like the switch. The only problem is that it makes a little bit of noise if you have it on but you are not playing. Not a big problem, but it's there.

Can't speak of the Corona or Boss options for chorus, but the EHX Bass Clone pictured above is a solid inexpensive option. (**If you find you have extra stimulus cash laying around, pick up a 2nd hand Iron Ether Polytope for around 175 and you'll not regret it**)

I recently picked up the Vortex and it seems quite versatile, particularly with the extra Tone Print options. Honestly I haven't had the chance to get too familiar with all it can do yet, as I've not yet made room it on my board.

I had the Corona Chorus and it failed on me after 4 months, so I don't rate then at all.
My chorus of choice now is the Nemphasis Steam Bass. Honestly the most usable and gorgeous sounding chorus effect I've used on bass ( in 25+ years ). It's a bit more expensive than the TC's but 100% better ( imho ) :)

Nice to read TB's speak about Chorus Pedals. Either you like them or hate them. I have played a few that I really liked. Source Audio Gemini for the money and what you get is fantastic. Also for the money EHX Bass Clone is worth 3X's its price. EBS is really nice . TC electronics TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger which they don't make anymore is a gem. My choice these days is the Water Fall by Jam Pedals in Italy. Amazing Pedal.
You may want to consider a phaser. I was never found the use for a Flanger but I like the MXR 90 and 95 Phasers. If you get a good fuzz you can get a nice Jet Phaser pedal type of sound.

Hi got a chorus and a flanger in my pedalboard. At the moment I have a ce2 clone (modified for bass) and a MXR117 clone (slightly modified). If you like the analog sound they're great sounding. I also had a small clone clone in my pedalboard (can't remember if I had modded it) but it sounds great, very liquid. It's analog too. If you're looking for something digital I suggest to you to take a look at tc pedals. I had a flashback delay and the tone print app let you have tons of great sounds. I think this is the same with vortex etc. ;)

The one I like best is the A/DA PBF flanger. I don't think I'll need another one now although I might try find a 2nds hand Zeropoint pedal which i liked very much too, when I tried it.
In terms of chorus I thought Jam waterfall to be quite good, but I get close enough with Fairfield shallow water or randy's revenge.

I am no fan of the TC ones and generally stay well clear of EHC( freeze being the exception)
