Advice for building a low budget halfstack for small gigs

If you are looking for a crisper tone, definitely consider the GK 12" cabinets (1x12, 2x12, 4x12). I found them to be quite clear, and ended up getting a pair that I stack vertically, powered by the GK MB200 head. All gotten second-hand for right about $400.

Price makes my wallet happy, sound makes my ears happy, weight makes my back happy, size makes my wife happy.

I'd strongly recommend a 4x10 and 500 watts or more so if you get a bigger gig, you'll be ready.

The Carvin suggestion is a good one if you really want to go new. A BX 700 watt head and BR series 4x10 would be right about $800.

If you go used, there's alot of options for a used setup in that range. If you can get a good deal on a head, maybe you can spring for an Avatar 4x10. I'm really happy with my Neo 4x10 and the weight savings is really worth the increased price.

I would definitely advise looking for used gear to put together a small gig rig.
I have a small gig rig that I put together for $250. Found a vintage SWR Studio220 in mint condition for $150 and a somewhat used but tight Genz-Benz 2x10 for $100. Both are older, from the 90's. It sounds killer and is very handy and portable for small club gigs and rehearsals but still big enough to keep up with an aggressive drummer.
Don't be too picky. There is a lot of really good older gear out there that doesn't cost much and you don't need 500 watts for a small gig.

Hadn't been there in years, but I just took a look at the TB classifieds amp/cap/etc forum. There's a wealth of great options there that will be great deals even after shipping.

If you want smaller----used 212 or 2 x 112

Also be sure to buy used, don't waste time building a rig that MIGHT sound good

If you buy used ( and cheap) and don't like it--- sell and buy something else--- also used

With a bit of patience and frequent visits to Craig's List you can get a great deal on a good rig. For example, I recently picked up a GK Backline 600 head and a GK RBX 115 cabinet for $150 along with an MB210 combo for $250. So for $400 total I got a 500 watt combo, a second cab and a backup head!

fEARful my friend. I gave up my 4x10's for a 12/6 and never looked back.
