Advice For Clearer Sound/Amp Settings

Hi all! I'm a beginner and new to all this with limited funds so I'm sorry for any ignorance on my part or if in the wrong thread! My current setup is a Fender Rumble 40 amp and a Rouge LX200b bass! I play fingerstyle and got (about a month or two old) normal Ernie Ball slinky bass strings too! :) My setup is just my laptop plugged into a stereo for the music as my bass amp floats from being on my desk to usually right under it, on my bedroom floor.

Is there a way to get a clearer sound instead of a thud muddy one, especially while recording covers? Or any amp settings to help get a crisp, crunchier tone with the setup I have since I don't have the money for any add ons? Any advice will be helpful and appreciated!

Hi, godly! Welcome to TalkBass.

If you wanna talk Rumble amp settings, come ask the experts in the Fender Rumble Club. We also have a collection of various Rumble amp settings you can try, called the Rumble TONE Pool, on our Rumble Club Wiki page linked in my signature. Be prepared to describe your gear, in more detail, such as bought new or used, condition when bought, modification(s) if any, age, and settings you've tried. This will help advisors to better understand your situation.

Don't rule out something possibly wrong with your bass, amp, or both. You might try taking them to a guitar store and asking to compare to their gear, especially if they have a Rumble 40 on the floor. Tell 'em you're considering trading up, at least one, maybe both! Then mix and match various basses with your amp and various amps with your bass to determine which is most in need of help.

Hope this helps you make a start toward improvement.
