Advice, Im buying a new rig

Hey guys, I was looking at the Eden WT550 amp and a stack of sorts (be it Eden, Mesa Boogie, SWR, or Hartke) but had a few questions. First I am playing with (right now) only one guitarist, he is playing a Mesa Boogie full stack (2 - 4x12 cabs on 200w head) and I wanted something that will give me comparable power on bass. So am I correct in assuming that the WT550 played @2ohms = 750w is enough? I will also be playing at my church, So I want my cabs "broken up" for ease of travel. I also may be playing with my cousin who runs an 8-string baritone guitar (30" scale) and we play prog metal/djent and funk. What is the best advice for buying cabinets to help me cut through the mix? 1x15 with 4x10? 1x15 with 2x12 with 2x10? or just a 6x12? Whatever it is I need to be able to cut through the mix of downtuned 8-strings and have a solid low end.

Any advice or a review on amps and cabs from Eden, Hartke, or Mesa Boogie would be great!

What types of rooms are you playing that your guitarist needs 8 12's and a 200 watt tube amp? I run either a Mesa PH412 or a Mesa PH1200 and either of them with ease can keep up with my guitarist playing a loud 100W all tube Marshall through a 412 cab.

I love these Mesa cabs and am buying a Mesa tube amp so I can run an all Mesa rig. They're the best sounding and overall built cabs I've played through since I started, and I don't plan on buying another brand for a very long time. Good luck!

To keep up with an 812 guitar stack you are going to need more power than an 810 will give you. If it was me I would add a fEARful 15sub to my 1515/66 rig.

One 1515/66 is like a 12x10 bass cabinet if your amp has enough balls to drive it. Add a 15/sub and you are looking at more SPL than two 810 cabs. :bassist:

+1 use 2 identical cabs, and +1 why on earth does the guitarist need 8 12's? Answer, he doesn't, and it will only make him TOO LOUD. Can't stress the 2 identical cabs enough, get a good 4x10, (or similar biggish cab), that you like, then double up on it.

My personal favorite rig is an Ampeg PF500 out of an Ampeg 810e. 500 watts, and incredibly loud. The 810's tilt back and roll, so they're actually a lot easier (at least for me) to carry than two 410's (if you we're to go that route).

The Eden WT550 is a great head and can handle 95% of the gigs out there. That said I'm not sure about stacking it against a 200 watt head with 2 412 cabs. You're guitar player is a turd and has no concept of what equipment he should have. I have played with dozens of guitarists who have no more than 25-30 watts and a 112 cab or combo and can blast with that rig.

To compete against that can be cost prohibitive. Get a used Ampeg fridge ($400-650) and the head of your choice. Or stick with your WT550 choice and get at least a pair of 410's.

I highly suggest not going with this combination, I used it for a show once and the 410XLT just buries the clear sounding XST. I also owned the 210XST along with my 410XLT. The extra low end you get out of this setup became USELESS in a band setting.

To the OP, your sentence says it all - cut through guitarists while still having solid low end. Fighting an 8 string guitar on one end and against 2 412's on the other, you will definitely need some serious fire power to get anywhere. The WT550 head is nice, I suggest going for something with more wattage.

If I read your post correctly, you want to have several cabs - correct? Two identical cabs are the way to go on this. I don't know what your volume requirements are at church......but if you have the PA helping you there, you can certainly get away with using something smaller. I suggest two GOOD 410's. Don't bother with budget gear and keep in mind that commercial bass cabs can only go so far in the low end. Plus, if your guitarists are pumping low end heavily, it's best to lower your low end content, (below 150hz) heavily. Then boost the mids a little and crank your rig. The resulting sound will end up being awful, but, you WILL CUT THROUGH.

I hope you guitarist learns that 2 412's on stage results in NO HELP FROM THE PA. If you are playing shows without a PA, you will need to get even more firepower than just two 410's. Check the previous posts for the fEARful information - those cabs can pound low end and clean tone like NOTHING else out there.

This is kinda one of those deals where learning to set the mix for your band and your guitardist learning to use his volume knob will save you several thousand dollars. Without those things it could literally take you 3 SVT and fridge rigs to keep up with what he has. Or that fEARful that CL was talking about above.

The theater I work in is a thousand seat auditorium, and I've seen guitarists taken out of the PA with a Mesa mark5 combo. That's a 1x12. I've seen a twin reverb drown out a SVT-CL and 810 to where I couldn't tell if the bassist was playing or not. That's 85w and 2x12 vs 300w and 8x10.

Learning to work together and setting up a sound that works for the whole band should be first, every single time. If you sound good, with plenty of clean low end and no mud, then you can be much quieter, which makes it so you can sound better and be heard easier.

I'm going to have to disagree. You used this combo for a show - once - and highly suggest not going with it? The punch of the XLT and low end of the XST is a great combo, I'm not sure what useless low end is from a bass rig. The 4 ohm cabs can be used separately or together - 750W @ 2 ohm s/b plenty of power for most situations.

I woyldnt use those cabs together because they probably sound like crap due to phasing. 410's already have enough issues with beaming, why add to it with two differently voiced cabs? No way to eq in a sound through both of them that will cut through all that guitar frequency.

Eden XLT coupled with XST cabs are awesome together. I have a D212XLT and D210XST - they sound great together.
