Advice on buying a Rickenbacker

This thread didn't get a response...
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/teach-me-about-rickenbackers-852131/index4.html

So I'm starting a new one.

I've decided to buy one of these babies because it's been my 'dream bass' for 30 years and I actually have the money. However, I've never purchased an instrument that I didn't lay hands on first......so this is a new experience for me.

I called MF today. They do not have a sale, but offered a 4003 Fireglo for $1900. I know if I catch them at 15% off the price should be $1700 or so....does that sound right? Where else can I look?

There's also this on Craigslist...a 2010 for $1700.

I'm thinking I should push MF (or some other place) to go to $1700.

Should I have any concerns with shipping? It's it better to pay for better shipping? (Better/safer handling?)

What about setting it up? I'm pretty sure it will need setup (and new strings?) - should I try that myself?

Anyway, I can't get over the fact that there's no store in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where I can just walk in and buy it.....

1700$ should be easy watch for sales also there is a guy thats works for MF that would probably cut you a 15% off deal today.

If the bass is new and stored properly the factory strings are awesome , my bass was delivered 12/8/2012, I Still have the original strings on it.

Mine has not been set up yet , hasnt needed it.

Not many stores have rics just sitting around . I have yet to see one in a guitar center or any store actually.

I have heard of this dealer selling new rics for 1500-1600.

Personally, I love the RIC strings, and they last the longest for me. They're just a little more expensive and have to be ordered rather than popping in to the local store and buying my second favorite strings.

Regarding setup, from the factory they're set up medium high so you have a lot of room to play with.
I like mine quite low.

I've heard North Coast Music is another good place to buy Rics.

I have a 2007 JG and back in February bought a 2011 Fireglo from a fellow TBer. Thunderous bass. Bought my first Ric in about 1980.

My other basses are Stingrays but I always end up back with the Rics.

Happy for you!

FYI - I paid $1600.00 for the 2 month old Fireglo. I have heard of people getting these $1100.00 Rics last summer. But you might wait a long time for that deal to come around again.

I received PMs from members that were very helpful. The two places I contacted were Northcoast Music and Wildwood Guitars. The quotes were $1519 and $1499....that includes them setting it up properly.

It's currently Friday here, about 1:00 AM. FedEx says it's arrived at the local hub. I must try to sleep as I will be up ALL DAY waiting for it...staring out of the window like a cat.
