advice on games.

ATI cards simply just cannot compare to the new Geforce 6800, it's that much better. It'll definitely take awhile for anyone to catch up as well. Nvidia just took a huge step forward with the 6800 and pixel shading technology.

Then again, ATI has always been pretty much behind, so what can ya do.

CoD is basicly counter-strike with different skins.

As for the threadstarter. imo, Day of Defeat is probably the best WWII game as far as gameplay goes. The HL englne is a bit dated but the game is still very good.

If you want something newer I'd hold out for HL2, it will come out with Counter-strike source. That is basicly CS converted to the HL2 engine though they'll throw in some newer stuff as well.

Coming from a guy who owns doom3 and recommends it, the best multiplayer out there (imho, of course) is still Natural-Selection for the HL engine. (I know wr's gonna say that savage is better, but I beg to differ; it's only better in graphics.) Excellent, excellent game with a great, and large community. The super-realistic tactical shooter, Hostile intent's great also. Note that both of those games are realatively slow-paced, so they're not for everyone, but I like them!

Ehhhhh, it depends. I don't have any hard evidence to back this up, (except that i have an x800 and it's a great card) but from what I understand ATI actually outperforms nvidia, if not matches it in Direct3D applications.

Battlefield 1942 is an awesome, awesome game. Major battles of WWII and you can fight on both the allied and axis sides. You can fly several varieties of planes, a number of tanks, this strange truck-missile launcher thing made by the Russians, jeeps, APCs, etc. etc. Awesome, awesome game. I love it!

ATI usually makes for better looking graphics, while NVidia makes for faster cards. A good way to look at it would be that if you're doing high end, professional graphics editing, you're going to want an ATI. Gaming, it's generally going to be a GeForce card that's going to be optimum for great looking graphics and fast frame-rates.

EDIT: Oh, and ATI's are much better for multi-monitor setups. GeForce's can do it fine (my brother's using a dual-monitor setup with a clocked GeForce ti4200 and it looks great) but ATI's do it supremely well -- Parhelia, anyone?

(do note that I realize the ridiculous cost of Parhelias and I can't say I'd be too lusty after one).

I feel terribly un-hip right now. I just played Unreal Tournament for the first time the other day...People keep asking me, "Oh, UT 2004?" And I can only reply, 'No, just UT."

Then they all laugh at me. I've not played a single game mentioned in this thread except Battlefield 1942.

I'm so un-hip it's a wonder my butt doesn't fall off.

Trust me, I'm summarily un-hip. I just happen to have a couple of gamers for brothers, so while I sound good, I rarely play games.

I don't know what makes you say that but it's just flat wrong. I don't know about the brand new ATI vs. GeForce (but I've heard the brand new ATI can hold it's own) but ATI has always OWNED Nvidia up through the 9800 vs. 5900. No contest.

Hehehe.........WrongRobot still spreading the "Savage" love. That game is way too freakin fun.....now that I am actually good at it, it is even better.

Currently, I am absorbed in Rise of Nations. I also take time out for anything from Tom Clancy.

However, my PC gaming has been just to hold me over until this Thursday......Madden 2005 on XBOX comes out!...............WooHoo!

Ok...great. I didn't say anything to the contrary. But I did say that up until these new cards ATI owned Nvidia always.
Nvidia was just not keeping up. That's probably why they went balls out on this one....just tired of getting whipped on by ATI.
